Annual Service Review Page 3 of 7 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? An annual service review is a report that we write for services that we have rated as good or excellent and have not had a key inspection in the last year. This report does not routinely include a visit to the service. The review is an analysis of all the information that we have gathered about the service since the last main inspection. Every year the registered manager is asked to provide us with written information about the quality of the service they provide by completing an Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA). The AQAA is a self assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gives us some numerical information about the service. We have used information from surveys returned to us by people using the service and information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. We also got information from what the manager has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. This information is used in part to focus our annual service review. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their AQAA when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgment is that the home is still providing a good service and the manager has planned areas for improvement in relation to service reviews, residents dental care, activities and environment. Six people who live at Grove House each completed one of our surveys for people using the service and the following comments were made. I was in rehab at Grove House for six weeks and I could not say enough about the care I received. The staff and physiotherapists were just brilliant and I could not have been better looked after if I was royalty. the food was just perfect three good balanced meals every day, what more could you ask for. The staff are so understanding and what Patience they have. I made some good friends there and I will never forget them. I know that if I was unwell again I would ask if I could go there again. I can never thank them enough and never forget them, God Bless them all. They are very helpful, good food and friendly staff, Im quite content here. The home does just about everything well. Maybe could do with more activities. They take care of every ones needs and the care staff cannot do enough for the people in their care. The AQAA told us that before people move into the home a pre admission assessment Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 is done to identify the specific needs of potential residents. It checks the homes ability to meet the assessed needs and a visit to the home before they move in helps the prospective residents and their relatives to decide about moving in. The home offers intermediate care and there is dedicated space for people to access specialised therapy programmes and care plans that focus on daily living skills so they can return home and live independently. Occupational therapy and physiotherapy services are provided for the intermediate care service. Comprehensive personal and health care assessments are always done to determine the residents changing needs. The home provides single bedrooms and bath and shower facilities that are fitted with aids and equipment to assist and promote mobility. Access to all health care support is available and all treatment plans are reviewed weekly by the GP. The manager plans to introduce regular dentist visits to the home and provide advice and training for staff so they are aware of how to identify and report problems in this area. According to the AQAA there is a flexible approach to daily life, promoting choice around routines like getting up and going to bed, choice of food, what to wear and which activities to join in. There is an open visiting policy but visitors access is managed by enter the home after ringing the doorbell and being let in. Regular religious services are offered at the home by the local Church of England and Roman Catholic Clergy. Four meals are provided each day and special diets are catered for. The AQAA told us there is a clear structured complaints procedure and a multi agency Safeguarding Adults policy. Training in this area is provided for all staff. Records in relation to complaints, concerns and safeguarding are kept to ensure a clear audit trail. The manager plans to introduce further safeguarding and care plan training for staff so that people using the service are protected from risk of harm. Scheduled maintenance contracts on the building, grounds and equipment ensures that the accommodation is comfortable and safe. The manager plans to change the carpet on Cedar corridor and lounge within the next twelve months. The AQAA told us that staff at the home have varied skills and knowledge in areas like moving and handling, first aid, dementia awareness and palliative care. 81 of care staff have a NVQ Level 2 in care. Care staff who completed our staff surveys made the following comments, Basic general care, personal care and general wellbeing of service users are done well by the home. Another staff wrote about what the home could do better, Improvements in furnishings like carpets, trips out for residents and extra night staff. Care staff dont get enough protection. A care staff at the home also wanted to tell us, I have concerns about night staff having to leave an EMD unit with no staff whilst Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 dealing with service users on other units. Another care worker asked us, Should bedroom doors be locked at night when residents are in bed? The AQAA told us that in the last twelve months an increase in care hours to ensure there are 2 care staff on the residential unit was temporarily put in place. The AQAA did not state if these hours covered the staff shortfall at night or at busier times in the day. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan and will do a key inspection by the 27th November 2010. However we can inspect the service at anytime if we have concerns about the quality of the service or safety of the people using the service.
