This inspection was undertaken to look at concerns raised that people may all have to go to bed by 8pm, are got up before 6am washed and dressed and then put back to bed, and the sufficiency of staffing levels at the home. We spoke to staff and looked at care records- people living at the home have dementia and were unable to tell us much about living at the home. We found that people are able to go to bed and get up when they want to, some people have a disturbed sleep pattern and they may go to bed and get up several times during the night. Care records showed us that people do sleep during the day. The home does have an Activity Coordinator who works three afternoons a week, however she also works at two other homes within her working week. Care staff told us that they there is a music to movement session fortnightly and regular entertainment that is advertised in the homes newsletter and on posters in the home. Care staff told us that current staffing levels do not allow them to do many activities. They told us: It would be really nice to take them out even to the park, or even have the time to sit and chat to the residents but we dont.Another member of staff told us; Staffing levels have always been an issue here, I was told that there should be one staff member to twelve people, but the dependency can be so high. The home had twenty- five people living there at the time of our visit. We were told that there are three to four care staff on duty during the day although we found that three care staff is the normal. There are two care staff on duty at night. We do not feel that current staffing levels enable all peoples needs to be met, particularly as this home cares for people who have dementia and can sometimes have behaviour that may be challenging. The home has no registered manager. We found that the deputy manager has been appointed as the homes manager and will be applying to be the registered manager. We discussed staffing levels with the manager and advised her that there must be sufficient staff available to care for people living at the home.
