What the care home does well The staff at Heathwood continue to provide a high standard of Dementia Care ensuringpeople are encouraged to maintain some control over their lives by making informed choices and taking part in appropriate activities of their choice. Staff also understood peoples individual needs, likes and dislikes making sure the care provided was personal to the individual. Heathwood provides a very concise activities programme and people are encouraged to take part. Regular outings and trips to theatres, the zoo and garden centres were a popular choice made by people at their residents meeting. The environment at Heathwood has been developed following up to date guidelines in providing a therapeutic environment for people with a cognitive disorder such as Dementia. Signage to all areas is very good and people have their own `front door` to their room. People spoken to spoke highly of the hard work and dedication of staff in the home. One person said, ` I would so like to be in my own home but this comes a close second, it is so nice with nice staff, good food and I do like my room.` Many of the people we spoke to could not express an opinion. One person nodded their head and smiled whilst pointing at a member of staff, whilst another person just wished to sit and hold hands, whilst talking about their happy memories. This showed that they had a feeling of wellbeing and indicated that they were happy living at Heathwood. There was a general happy relaxed atmosphere in the home and the mealtime observed was a cheerful relaxed social occasion. The manager carries out an in-depth quality assurance process asking all people involved with the home, including the residents their opinions of the care provided and what suggestions they would make for improvements. Prior to this inspection we sent surveys to be completed. We received 7 surveys from people living in the home and 7 from staff working there. The surveys from people living in the home were completed with a relatives assistance. They indicated that people were very happy with the care they received, and that they had received appropriate information before they moved into the home. One person said, `my mother is very happy at Heathwood, she is well cared for, always clean and well turned out. The staff are helpful and kind and visitors are very welcome. The environment is pleasant and airy, it is expertly maintained and there are plenty of stimulating activities and entertainment.` Another person said, `The staff show a loving and caring approach to each individual resident. They respect their privacy but also have a way of including them in all activities making it fun and enjoyable. Nothing is too much trouble.` Further comments said that `Heathwood is always cheerful, warm and welcoming, with exceptionally kind and committed staff.` and `We are very happy with all aspects of mums care.` Staff surveys indicated that they felt well supported and received training relevant to their role in the home. One person said they had all the training they needed and concluded, `it`s a real care home for our residents, always giving the best care and support. Whilst also giving us the training and knowledge to provide many activities forpeople who live at Heathwood.` Another person said, `the manager and owners have a very good understanding of the needs of people with Dementia and provide appropriate training for staff.` What the care home could do better: No recommendations or requirements were made following this inspection. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 9 What we found:
This was an unannounced inspection, which was carried out to confirm that the staff and providers at Heathwood still provided excellent care for people living in their home. We looked at two care records for people who had recently moved into the home. We then spoke to them and other people living at Heathwood about the care they received. We then looked at the records kept by staff about the medication two people took through the day and the way they recorded the receipt, storage and administration of medication. We carried out a tour of the home and spoke to people about their rooms and the communal areas. After talking to people living in the home we looked at the staff personnel records for two people who had been recently employed. We then spoke to staff about their work in the home and the training and support they received. We looked at other records such as Accident Reports and notifications that the manager must send to the Commission when things happen in the home that may have an effect on people living there. We found that the manager continued to provide plenty of information for prospective residents so they would be able to make an informed choice of care home. We saw that two people who had recently moved into the home had very in depth pre-admission assessments ensuring staff were well informed and that the manager could meet their needs. These assessments included personal likes and dislikes as well as a life and social history. We then looked at how the care plans had been developed from the pre-assessment information to provide holistic care. The care plans were person centred. They identified personal likes and dislikes especially about the way people would like to be cared for as well as preferences for social activities and dietary preferences. We also saw that people were enabled to take advantage of local health care support such as the dentist, chiropodist, optician and district nurse service. People were also assisted to attend outpatient appointments and local clinics. During our visit to the home we spoke to people about the care they received everybody said they felt well cared for and respected by staff. We also observed the activities that were happening in the home. An activities organiser maintains a steady programme of activities for people to take part in and a concise record was maintained to evidence that people were encouraged to join in with a variety of activities. The minutes from Resident meetings showed that people had been included in deciding the type of activity they preferred. People spoken to said there was always plenty to do. We looked at the employment records for two members of staff recently employed. They contained all the information required. This meant that the manager carried out a very in-depth and robust employment process, obtaining references, CRBs and checking reasons for gaps in employment history. People also followed an in-depth induction, which included subjects relevant to their role in the home. We saw that important records the manager is required to keep in the home were up to date and available for inspection. What the care home does well:
