We visited Higham House on 11th May 2010 to check that requirements made at the time of the last key inspection (which took place on 8th June 2009) have been met. During the course of the visit, we spoke to a person who uses the service, a relative and a health care professional. We also took into account all of the information we have received since the date of the last key inspection, including the providers annual quality assurance assessment. No comment cards were received on this occasion. We found that action has been taken to meet the requirements that were made at the time of the last inspection. The individual plans that we inspected contained more detail. They have been reviewed monthly to ensure that information is up to date. Assessments and care plans relating to the use of reclining chairs have also been completed. A fence has been erected to the side of the home to separate a patio area from a neighbouring property. A lock has been fitted to the laundry cupboard and the door was locked at the time of our visit. A storage area has been created at the top of the stairs. Hoists and other equipment were stored appropriately. We found a gel prescribed for pain relief and an antiseptic cream in a persons room. The acting manager stated that the person had chosen to store these items in her room. An assessment has been completed, which indicates that the presence of the gel & cream constitutes a low risk to people who use the service. The acting manager stated that a subsequent investigation indicated that the gel was no longer required and reported that it has been removed. She agreed to provide a lockable storage facility in the persons room. The medication administration records that we inspected contained a number of omissions. A fire exit on the first floor was easily accessible at the time of our visit. A key for a fire exit on the ground floor was not however near the door. The acting manager returned the key to a hook beside the door before the end of our visit. What the care home does well: What they could do better:
