Hillside Lodge is a two-storey purpose built facility of traditional brick and tiled construction. The home is situated in a residential area of the town of Berwick. Car parking areas are provided at the front of the building giving level access to the home. There are grassed sitting areas, which can be used by residents and visitors. The surrounding area is predominantly residential. There are bedrooms and shared areas on both floors and there is a lift in the centre of the home near the entrance. All of the bedrooms are single occupancy with en-suites containing a toilet and hand basin. There are showers and bathrooms and toilets situated on each of the floors and dining areas and lounges of appropriate size to meet the number of resident in the home. The home charges fees of £431.65 per week for care. As the home provides nursing care the free nursing care element of the funding is provided in addition to the costs charged to the resident. The nursing care medium band is currently £103.80 pounds and the high band is £142.80. Continuing care is at £574.15 per week. What the care home does well Peoples` care needs are clearly identified within their individual plans, which are regularly reviewed to reflect their changing needs. Health care needs are identified and met. Night care profiles are in place to show the support needed by individuals. People are able to make choices about their routines and lifestyle including rising and retiring times. Good systems are in place for dealing with complaints or allegations. This protects people living in the home. The home is comfortable and well maintained to provide a pleasant environment for the people living there. Aids and adaptations are fitted to suit the needs of the people living in the home. Good infection control procedures are in place to protect people living in the home and staff. Staffing levels were sufficient to meet the needs of the people living in the home. Good staff recruitment procedures protect people. Staff receive plenty of training opportunities to make sure they have the skills to meet peoples` needs. Care plans show that peoples individual needs and preferences are identified and met by staff. People living in the home said that they are happy with the support they receive and said that they are able to make choices about their lifestyle and routines. They said that they are treated with dignity and respect. Staff showed during the inspection that they were aware of individuals needs and wishes. Staffing levels were adequate to meet the needs of the people living at the home. Appropriate recruitment procedures and practices are followed to ensure that people living in the home are protected. Good arrangements are in place to ensure that staff receive training that equips them with the skills to meet the needs of the people living in the home. New staff receive induction training and support when they first start work. The home was clean and tidy during the inspection and no odours were evident. There is evidence that a rolling programme of redecoration is in place. Staff said that repairs are addressed promptly and the manager confirmed this. Records were in place to show that health and safety and infection control policies and procedures are followed to protect people living and working in the home. People are protected by the homes good systems for dealing with complaints and safeguarding issues.
