Annual Service Review Page 3 of 7 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We, The Care Quality Commission (CQC) did an unannounced key inspection to this home on the 12 December 2007. At the time of this inspection we gave the home a two star, good rating. As for all good and excellent services the following year it had an annual service review, (ASR) on the 8 October 2008. It was due a key inspection this year but because of changes to our work practices we are not inspecting good services this year, but focusing our efforts on poor and adequate services. We looked at all the information we had received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included: The service history which is a record of any incoming correspondence from the home, or outside agencies, relatives or the service users. The home are required to notify us of any event affecting the safety and, or well being of service users. This is called a notification. We also act on other information such as complaints and safeguarding concerns. We have not received any concerns about this home. The manager notified us of a recent incident and this was dealt with satisfactorily. The home were asked to complete and return to us their Annual Quality Assurance Assessment, (AQAA) which they did in the timescale given. This is a detailed self assessment tool which provides us information about how the home is managed and is meeting the needs of the people living at the home. Resident and staff surveys were returned to us. What has this told us about the service? The Annual Quality Assurance (AQAA) was completed in good detail and told us how the home are continuing to meet the needs of the residents and are complying with regulation. You told us that: Holly Cottage offers a safe, secure environment for all the people living there. The home have person centered plans which assist staff in meeting residents needs and identifying when needs are unmet or changed. The home hold regular house meetings and care plans are reviewed. Annual reviews are held and records are updated accordingly. Our residents enjoy a very involved and varied lifestyle. The home have a designated area to provide social activities, and staffing ratios enable residents to have one to one time with staff. The home source and access alot of activities in the local community, both through the day and weekend. We have implemented health action plans and also body mapping for the staff to use to clarify any health care needs, concerns. No complaints have been made against the service. We have not received any Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 complaints or safeguarding referrals for this home. The manager stated that the complaints procedure is clear and explained to everyone. Care plans are reviewed monthly and any concerns are dealt with directly. The home is well decorated and maintained and the owners take pride in the environment. After a stringent recruitment and fair selection process, all potential staff will undertake a maximum of three interviews to determine the best person for the job. You told us that staffing ratios are good and staff turn over is low. The home try to ensure that all staff complete the mandatory training within the three month induction period. New staff complete a foundation course, Learning Disability Qualification (LDQ.) and then go on to be registered for a National Vocational Award. 50 percent of staff already hold a nationally recognized qualification. The home stated that staff did not want regular supervision. It is a requirement that staff have regular supervision. The home is registered as a limited liability partnership and is made up of a family group , father, mother and their grown up children. Between them they have a wealth of experience and are able to utilize each others strengths. We received five surveys from people living at the home. We asked them what the home does well and what they could do better. They told us: That the home could do nothing better. They told us what the home does well. Clean house, staff nice to me. Liked the holiday. garden, nice dinner. I like the day service because we do lots of different things and meet lots of people. They look after me well and cook me nice dinners. I like the home as it is, I dont want anything to change. We received four completed staff surveys. We asked staff what the home did well. They told us. I have enjoyed every moment so far and feel honoured to have been chosen for a position here. They said they had received good training. Provides healthy, nutritious food. Clean home, trips out, keeps up with all health appointments, opticians ect. The home I work in meets all the needs of the residents. I think providing them with day care facilities is a good attribute. Staff told us what the home could do better: Slow down sometimes as average age is now over 60. Offer more individual activities. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 Providing the residents with more choices. Could provide staff with Scip training. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We will not change our inspection plan and plan to do a key inspection by the 12 October 2010. We are able to inspect a registered service at any time if we receive information which warrants an inspection.
