What the care home does well The resident`s identified needs are carefully woven in their care plan. The implementation of health and personal care needs is being monitored internally through an ongoing review system; the placing authority undertakes its own annual review for each resident, in order to ensure that identified needs are being met and unmet needs, closely monitored. The weekly meetings for residents help them to take part in the running of the home. Each person also meets every month with their key worker, in order to make sure that they are receiving the right support that they need. Information and staff support on how to make a complaint is available to the residents. Care and staff management systems are being implemented to good effect. NVQ training for staff is being given a high profile, which means that staff have the skills and knowledge to deliver a good service to residents. Regular staff supervision and appraisal systems are in operation to meet the needs of staff. The relationships between the staff and the residents were positive. The manager and staff appeared committed and they are very good at helping residents to indicate what their wishes are and to support them in making them happen. They are good at this because they have got to know them so well. What the care home could do better: There is one requirement and one recommendation arising from this inspection report, which need addressing.Requirement: Staff recruitment files must include a recent photograph as detailed in Schedule 2 of the Care Homes Regulations 2001. We, the Care Quality Commission, undertook this unannounced random inspection on 6 May 2010. We spoke with 5 residents, the manager and 2 care staff. We had a look round the home and viewed a sample of records the service must keep. At the time of the visit, there were 14 people in residence with 2 vacancies. The areas we focused during this inspection include personal and health care support, concerns, complaints and protection, and staffing. We found that the personal and health care needs of each resident have been identified and reflected in their care plan. Staff have a good knowledge of their needs and evidence indicates that the residents needs are being addressed well. The home has a positive approach to complaints and staff make sure that residents and significant others know how to complain, if dissatisfied with any aspects of the service. A record of complaints is maintained. The staffing arrangements are adequate to meet the needs of the current resident group. The manager and staff work well as a team; this promotes good communication and improves consistency and continuity of care. What the care home does well: What they could do better:
