What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection, which included; - surveys returned to us by people who use the service - surveys returned to us by staff who work at the service - speaking to the manager of the service - information we have about how the service has managed any complaints - what the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement - the previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months - relevant information from other organisations - what other people have told us about the service What has this told us about the service? We received survey responses from three people who use the service. They told us that they generally get the support they need from Huguenot Place and that the staff mostly listen to them and act upon what they say. They said that the staff generally treat them well they feel their dignity and privacy is respected. Most people who use the service said they are able to make decisions about what they do each day, with one saying that sometimes they can. Where we asked where the service could improve, most people said that nothing needs to improve, or that they do not know. Most people who use the service said that they know who they can talk to if they are not happy about something, though not everyone knows how to make a formal complaint should they need to. People who use the service say that the home does well through providing a clean environment, and that the home is always fresh and clean. We received survey responses from four staff who work at Huguenot Place. The majority said that they had a thorough recruitment and a good induction to their role. The staff said that they feel they have enough experience and knowledge to meet the needs of the people who use the service, and that they generally training that is Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 relevant to their job. Some staff said that they would like to see more training in mental health, sign language and deaf awareness, for them and also for new staff and agency staff. Some staff said that the service promotes independence of the people who live there, though some said that the approach is not always consistent, particularly where there are non permanent staff working at the home. Staff said that they feel they generally have enough information to enable them to meet the needs of the people who use the service, and that they get appropriate support from the manager. However, one staff member said that they feel they only sometimes get enough support. All staff said that they would know what to do if someone raised concerns about the service. Other feedback from staff about how the service could improve include the service providing more activities for the people who live there and more training for staff. In response to our question about what the service does well, staff said that they feel there is good communication, which is enhanced through the regular meetings. We looked at the notifications we have received from the service and we appear to have received notifications for all incidents that we are aware of at the service. There have been a number of safeguarding issues at the service over the past year, particularly between two or three people who use the service, and we are aware that the service is working with the local authority to look at ways that these can be managed. As part of this review we spoke to the manager of Huguenot Place. The manager has worked at the service for approximately one year, on an agency contract. The manager informed us that she was due to leave the service in the near future, as a permanent manager has now been recruited for the service. We asked if she could ask her line manager to inform us in writing of the impending management changes at the service. The manager told us that it has been a difficult year for Huguenot Place, with a number of safeguarding incidents that have happened, and the affect this has had on the people who use the service and the staffing of the service. She said they have been working with members of the multi-disciplinary team to address these issues, and put measures in place to ensure that people are safe living at the home. She said that the staff team has learned a lot from the incidents that have occurred, and that the team has worked well together to manage these. The manager said that work is currently taking place to redecorate the external environment and also update the internal environment of the home. The manager said that staff have undertaken training in person centred approaches to working with service users, and they have also done safeguarding training. She also said that following a recent recruitment drive, the home will shortly have a full complement of staff. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? The service continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection and they have shown that they have managed issues well. The home works well with us and have shown us that their service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. Annual Service Review Page 6 of 7 Reader Information
