What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The report of the previous key inspection which took place on the 11th November 2008. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service and that they know what improvements they need to make. We sent surveys to people living at the home, information gathered from surveys told us that people are happy living at the home, and feel that they are cared for well by staff who listen and act on what they say. Surveys told us that people living at the home are confident to raise concerns and enjoy the meals provided. Surveys did highlight that some people living at the home believe that the environment could be improved. We sent surveys to relatives and friends of people living at Ivydene, surveys told us that people are very satisfied with the care and support provided by staff at the home. Surveys praise staff for the care and support they provide, stating that nothing is too much trouble. Surveys told us that the home keeps them informed about significant events, and that they are confident to raise concerns with the home. Surveys did include additional comments, as to what they thought the home did well, and what it could do to improve. Comments included:- Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 The staff are always welcoming to myself and members of the family. Ivydene staff have been a godsend to this family. The service keeps me well informed about any health concerns my relative has. Interacts in a friendly way towards the residents. Always deal with patients in a caring and compassionate manner, I go in daily at different times, and always find the staff welcoming and helpful. A bit more entertainment and activities. Ivydene could do with a good makeover. It is beginning to look a little shabby. I think they could have more frequent entertainment and I also think more could be made of the garden to provide a secure area for sitting and getting some fresh air. The home is looking a little tired and the conservatory roof needs replacing as it leaks. Be spruced up a little, its looking a little tired. We sent surveys to health and social care professionals, surveys told us that those living at the home are supported by staff who have a good understanding of their needs, who promote peoples rights and maintain their privacy and dignity. Surveys included additional comments as to what the service does well, comments included:Manages several of my patients, meeting their care needs appropriately. Generally come across as a good caring home providing a supportive caring environment. They liaise with service users, family and health and adult social care professionals. They monitor and review service users needs well. The carers are excellent in the way they relate with the service users. They are also very good at treating them with respect and digntiy and ensuring their privacy. Whenever I visit Ivydene it comes across as being a very homely atmosphere, residents and staff always appear happy and relaxed. The Manager is very professional and experienced. Fabulous staff, who are mainly a little bit older when patients are in the last few days of their lives, and always go the extra mile to get the care and support people need, to enable the patient to stay in the environment they know as home. I have no concerns about the care given in this home as a community nurse, attending patients when required. District nursing staff are always welcomed and staff are always helpful and professional. We sent surveys to staff who work at the home, they told us that their recruitment was robust and that their induction and the training they receives enables them to care for people well. They told us that they are supported by the Manager and that they work well together as a team. Surveys included additional comments as to what they thought the home did well, and what it could do to improve. Comments included:- Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 We look after our service users well and support their family as well. We are like a family so it is a happy place. I have worked here many years and have been given a lot of training. I have worked at Ivydenedignity for over 10 years, Ive always had good support from the management team, I have been on courses. Ivydene is a happy and family home for service users and staff. I couldnt see myself working anywhere else. Improve the environment for the people who live at Ivydene. Information contained within the AQAA told us that the home has not received any complaints within the last twelve months, and the Care Quality Commission has not received any complaints or concerns within the same time period. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection and they have shown they have managed issues well. They work well with us and have shown us that their service continues to provide good outcomes for people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 10th November 2010. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of people using the service. Annual Service Review Page 6 of 7 Reader Information
