What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information we have received or asked for, since the last annual service review. This included: - The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment document that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. - Surveys returned to us by people who live at the home, and staff who work for the service. - Information we have about how the service has managed complaints. - What the service has told us about things that have happened to people living in the home. These are called Regulation 37 notifications and are a legal requirement. - The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits we have made to the service in the last 12 months. - relevant information from other organisations. - What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The service sent us the AQAA when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. The AQAA told us that the service has been using the Liverpool Care Pathway, which is a care approach for people nearing the end of their lives, enabling people who live at the home, to end their lives at the home instead of in hospital. It told us that they have been working well with the DALE nurses to support this care. It told us that there have been improvements in the environment of the home. All bedrooms have new bed linen and soft furnishings, new arm chairs have been bought for bedrooms and lounges, and new large screen televisions have been bought to replace the old ones in two of the lounges. We were also told that more shrubs and plants have been planted in the garden to make it look nicer all year round, and the patio is being extended. It told us that seven of the 13 permanent staff are trained to National Vocational Qualification level 2 or above. It also told us that staff had been trained in other areas such as dealing with challenging behaviour, and are due to receive training in nutrition care. The manager and some of the staff have also received training on the Mental Capacity Act and the Deprivation of Liberty Act. The AQAA informed us that the service has received no complaints in the last 12 Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 months. There have been no safeguarding investigations. We at the CQC have also not received any complaints about Kingswood Lodge. We received 11 surveys back from people who live at Kingswood Lodge care home. Some were completed by the resident themselves, others were supported to complete them either by staff, or by a relative. All were very positive about the care they receive at Kingswood Lodge. Ten people said that the care staff and manager always treat them well, with one saying they usually treat you well. Nine thought the home was always fresh and clean, with two saying it was usually fresh and clean. Eight people felt that the staff and manager always listened and acted on what they said, with three saying the usually listened and acted on what they said. All respondents knew who to speak to if they werent happy, and how to make a complaint. When residents were asked what the service does well, people replied: everything now I know I dont have to worry about Mum as I know she is in the capable hands of Jane (manager) and her team they care for us meals, good staff everything cant fault it tries hard to care as best they can. When asked what the service could do better, the responses were: nothing activities - bingo We received five responses from staff who work at Kingswood Lodge. Staff told us that they have received induction training and training to enable them to do their work well, although one member of staff felt the training did not keep them up to date with new ways of working. Staff generally felt supported by management, and most felt there was enough staff on duty to meet the needs of the people who live at the home. Staff felt the home does well in trying to look after everyone as best we can and as individuals. One person felt the service could do better by having more time for more one on one care for more challenging individuals. We looked at the Regulation 37 notifications sent to us by the service and were satisfied that the service had acted appropriately with each incident. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 We are going to continue to monitor the service, and will carry out a key inspection as part of our monitoring process. We can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of service being provided to people who live at Kingswood Lodge care home.
