Annual Service Review Page 4 of 8 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information we have received or asked for, since the last annual service review. This included: - The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment document that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. - Surveys returned to us by people who live at the home, staff who work for the service, and health and social care professionals involved in the care of people who live at Lenthall House - Information we have about how the service has managed complaints. - What the service has told us about things that have happened to people living in the home. These are called Regulation 37 notifications and are a legal requirement. - The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits we have made to the service in the last 12 months. - relevant information from other organisations. - What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The service sent us the AQAA when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. It told us of the improvements the service has made in the last 12 months. It told us that the service has improved aspects of the environment by refurbishing four toilets, and creating space within the toilet room to make it more easy for people using wheelchairs to maneuver in the space available. It told us, amongst other things, that as a result of feedback from residents, the times for breakfast, tea time, and supper time have changed. We were also told that new garden furniture has been bought, and new activities have also been bought to give all people living at Lenthall House the opportunity to engage in small and larger group activities. The AQAA told us that out of the 23 permanent care workers, 15 have achieved a National Vocational Qualification to level 2 or above, with the service hoping to achieve a 100 rate of staff having this qualification within the next 12 months. It also told us that staff have also received training to help them support people who have dementia, and have received training in areas such as Moving and Handling, Fire Awareness, Catheter Care, and the Mental Capacity Act. The AQAA informed us that the service has received one complaint. It was investigated, and the complaint was not upheld. We at the CQC have not received any complaints about the service. It also told us that the service now complies with the Annual Service Review Page 5 of 8 regulations governing the safe housing of controlled medication. We received six surveys back from people who live at Lenthall House, two of which were completed with support from family members. All people who responded said they were given enough information to help them decide whether Lenthall House was the right home for them. Three said they always get the care and support they need, with three saying they usually get the care and support they need. Four felt that staff always listened and acted up what they said, with two saying that staff usually act upon this. Five said they always get the medical care they need, with one saying they usually get needed medical care. Five said they always like the meals at the home, and four said the home was always fresh and clean with the others saying it is usually fresh and clean. Two people added extra comments when asked what the home does well. These were: I am very happy here, the staff are very kind and helpful they care for your needs We received ten replies from staff who work at Lenthall House. Most staff told us they were being given training that was relevant to their role, but three staff did not feel they were given enough knowledge about health care and medication. Seven staff felt they got regular support and meetings to discuss how they were working, with three feeling that they often got support. Seven staff felt there was usually enough staff to meet the individual needs of people who live at Lenthall House, but three felt there was only sometimes enough staff. Three felt the there was always enough support, experience and knowledge to meet the different needs of people who live at the home, with seven feeling there was usually this. Comments about what staff felt the service does well included: Communication with staff and management. Care for residents, making sure we meet all their needs good food regular bathing and showers makes residents feel that this is their home and try to meet all their needs It provides a pleasant, caring environment..it is a clean, well maintained house with caring staff. Staff thought the service could improve by: getting a new minibus to get residents out and about regulating visiting times so that residents are not disturbed when eating their meals having more staff at week-ends..as we appear always to be short on care, kitchen and domestic Annual Service Review Page 6 of 8 all care staff should be able to do NVQ 3 One health and social care professional completed the survey. They commented that the service provides a pleasant, caring environment for the residents. It is a clean,well-maintained house with caring staff. We looked at the Regulation 37 notifications sent to us by the service. As well as keeping us informed of what the service did in response to people for example, becoming ill, falling, or needing hospital treatment, the service also notified us of a medication error. We were satisfied that the service had acted quickly and effectively in response to this error. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are going to continue to monitor the service, and will carry out a key inspection as part of our monitoring process. We can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of service being provided to people who live at Lenthall House care home.
