Annual Service Review Page 3 of 7 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service Telephone discussion with the Registered Manager. What has this told us about the service? The service completed the AQAA and it was returned to us by the required date. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. This service was purchased by new providers Creative Support in June 2008, it was previously part of the Richmond Fellowship. Staff and people using the service report that many positive changes have been made resulting in improvements for people in areas of lifestyle choice and greater involvement in the daily running of the service. The last key inspection of this service was on 28/10/08. No requirements were made. Several recommendations were made relating to areas of: Medication, complaints and statement of purpose information, care planning information about personal preferences and moving and handling training updates for staff. The Manager confirmed that all the recommendations have been acted upon, many were confirmed in information given in the AQAA. The service have received one complaint since the last inspection and this was swiftly and appropriately actioned. No complaints have been received by us since the last inspection. One safeguarding referral was made by the home after an incident between two people using the service. This was dealt with under the mutli-disciplinary safeguarding procedures. The Manager provided the detail of information and attended a Safeguarding Strategy Meeting. The views of people using the service are sought by means of regular Fortnightly Service User Meetings, usually chaired by someone from the North Staff Users Group Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 (independently). Minutes are taken and the Manager checks that the information is acted upon swiftly. There is a suggestion/complaints box for the use of residents, visitors and staff, providing a good facility for anonymity if preferred. Additionally annual questionnaires are sent to people using the service, families, friends and other professionals to allow feedback about the service being provided. People are encouraged to talk to independent advocates and particularly those who may not have capacity. The range of activities have been extended to include additional options both internally and externally. The accent is upon accessing community activities, groups and facilities. The providers have allocated finances for this purpose. Each person is given £32 per month to spend upon activities of their choice. People are encouraged to maximise their independence taking responsibility, with support if needed, for in-house domestic activity - cleaning their bedrooms, dealing with laundry, maximising personalisation of their own rooms and also communal rooms. Improvements in individual support plans have been made, with a new format introduced with greater involvement from people using the service. Plans are more individualised. The AQAA indicates the service has improved over the past year with involvement with Re-settlement teams to encourage more positive risk taking to promote social skills allowing people to move eventually to more independent living. There is a fairly static staff group many with considerable experience in the service. Training is offered to all for NVQ study and 5 of the 10 project workers have achieved NVQ Promoting Independence Level 3, one is working towards the Certificate in Mental Health. Nursing staff are supported and provided with updated training relevant to their work and NMC Registration. There are regular minuted staff meetings. Asked in the AQAA, how the service has improved over the past 12 months, this has been summarised as follows: Given residents more written information. Organised training for residents. Liaised and worked along side Changes to deliver workshops for residents. A more comprehensive induction package for staff. Support more people to join community groups and involved residents in interviewing new staff, with a positive result. From the information in the AQAA, discussion with the Manager and a range of other information available to us, our judgment is that the home continues to provide a good service as outlined in the last key inspection report. They continue to let us know about things that have happened since our last inspection and shown that they manage issues well. They work well with us and we are satisfied that outcomes for people continue to be good and positive. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 We have no immediate plans to carry out a key inspection and will continue to monitor progress and outcomes for people using this service. However, we can inspect the service at any time if we have any concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using it.
