We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included any of all of the following: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that is completed by the home annually. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people living at the home. It also gives some numerical information. Surveys returned to us by people living the home and from other people with an interest in its operation. Information we have about how the home has managed any complaints. What the home has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection report and the results of any other visits that we have made to the home in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the home. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it and it was clear and gave us all of the information we required. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service but that they need to be vigilant to maintain standards and continue to listen to people in order to identify what further improvements they need to make. We received feedback from all of the people living at the home, which was written down with staff help, and they were all positive about the service being provided and about the the staff employed by the home. They all told us that they were involved in the process of moving to the home and that they, or their representatives, were given information about the home before they moved in. We were told that they always make decisons about what they do each day, that the staff always listen and act on what they say to them, that they receive the care and support that they need and that usually there are enough staff available when they need them. People told us about the high standards of cleanliness of the home, that they liked the meals provided and that they all knew who to speak to if they were not happy. At the last inspection and in the AQAA we were told about the ongoing programme of staff training, and that the national target for staff completing the National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) at level 2 had been exceeded. We were also told that 2 of the staff team enrolled for training at level 3, which is in excess of the national target and is to be commended. Staff are more involved in the home is run, and those that sent back Annual Service Review Page 3 of 5 their replies to us told us that they always have access to support from senior staff to meet the needs of people living at the home. There has been a turnover of staff since the last inspection and a new member of staff told us that I have been working here for a couple of months and I find that the people are really well looked after. The same member of staff described a very good programme of induction to the home and about ongoing training that helped them meet needs and support the people at the home properly. Staff told us that they were informed about things happening at the home and all replied positively to our questions and their answers indicated that things always or usually were carried out as planned. The said that the staff group are encouraged to treat each person as an individual and to lead a normal and healthy life. One member of staff said that we could not do anything more, its like a real family home. In the AQAA we were told about the changes that have occurred at the home since the last inspection and these included improvements to the care planning documentation, the provison of new furniture round the home and updated checks for all staff by the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB). The latter was a legal requirement made at that inspection. As part of our ongoing contact with the home we asked them to investigate an anonymous complaint. The managers investigation indicated that they carried out all the required checks on staff employed at the home, that there are sufficient numbers of staff on duty to support people and that the management of medicines is carried out properly with staff being properly trained. There have been no situations that required referral under statutory procedures for safeguarding vulnerable people in the past year. Our discussions with the manager indicated that the home has continued to support the interests of the people living there. As one person said in their concluding remarks in our survey: they look after us very well here and there is nothing more for me to add to that. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 21st January 2012. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
