Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found:
People are supported to manage their own medecines if they wish to do so and are able to do so. Clear policies are available on all aspects of medicine management to give guidance to staff who give medicines to people safely. Risk assessment for people managing their own medicines are available. There are no individual care plans around medicines prescribed only when needed. There were several gaps on the record chart for medicine that should have been signed for as given. On further checking we found these had been given but not recorded as such. The morning medicines for one person were signed as given but at lunch time these were observed to be given. These were in the nurses pocket in a pot. The medicines had been prepared to give, signed and the resident had gone out before taking them. The medicine administration record chart should only be signed after giving the medicine.
