Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 9 What we found:
We visited the home unannounced to follow up the requirements made at the previous key inspection. Several vulnerable adults strategy meetings had been recently held with social services and one complaint had alerted us to undertake this random visit. The Deputy Manager was in charge of the home and she assisted us. We found that the requirements from the previous inspection had been met, however the following issues were identified at this visit. Outcome area 3 The eight people sat in the lounge and seven people observed in their bedrooms did not have access to any water or drinks. In all areas water jugs and beakers had been placed out of reach. This was discussed with the kitchen staff who deliver the water out into the home and the care staff who have a responsibility to observe the individuals fluid intake of people living in the home. Outcome Area 5 We saw that the home was generally clean and tidy in most areas, however several bedrooms were found to have a malodour and this was also noted by the deputy manager. One overbed light and a radiator thermostat were seen hanging off the wall by their electric cable, the maintenance person was alerted to this during the visit. The paintwork on several doors was noted to be in a poor condition. A bedroom door had the No.1 missing off room number 16 which could had caused confusion and left the person whose room it was at risk of clinical error. Call systems were not within reach of all people seen on the day of the inspection. Eight people were sat in a lounge and five people were seen in their bedrooms and all had no access to a call system. One lady had a pressure mat but no buzzer. An adapter is to be used in these circumstances. The bedroom of one lady who was unwell was untidy and required a clean, this was brought to the attention of a carer who attended to the room. A soiled continence pad was found on the floor of an unoccupied bedroom, the carer had taken the person to the lounge and not returned to the room to tidy up. The pad was not in a disposal bag. Staff were seen serving food without blue aprons on. Curtains noted at the last inspection had been tidied up but were still hanging. Outcome Area 7 Food hygiene issues were raised at this inspection, A carer was evidenced to pick up a biscuits with her fingers to give to a lady having a hot drink. Meals were brought to those people eating in the lounge on a metal clinical trolley. Plastic beakers were being used for all people in the home and these were stained and very unappealing.
