Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: Following the last key inspection of the home we made a requirement that records of all medication administered to people in the home must be kept. During the visit we inspected the current months medication administration record for seven people who live in the home. These records had all been fully completed. The manager reported that she completes a monthly audit of the medication, including the records that are kept of medication administration. These audits were inspected and contained an action plan for any issues that were identified. The action plan is assessed at the next audit to ensure the work had been completed. The medication is administered by the qualified nuring staff and all staff administering medication completed a training update in January 2009. This requirement has been met. The manager informed us of an incident in August 2008 where a staff member did not follow the correct medication procedures. As a result of the investigations the staff member was subject to the homes disciplinary procedures. During the visit we inspected the care plans and care records of three people who live in the home. Each person had care plans in place that set out how their assessed needs should be met. The plans had been reveiwed each month and had been updated where necessary. Records were kept of the personal care support people had received and any specific care needs, for example, a record of turning for people who were at risk of pressure ulcers and a fluid intake chart. We spoke with two people who live in the home during the visit. Both reported that they received support to take their medication when they need to and that staff treated them well and know their needs. When we completed an Annual Service Review for the home in July 2008 some of the people who live in the home said they did not feel there were always enough staff available. The manager reported that since this review an additional member of care staff has been used each morning. This means that there are now 2 nurses and 5 carers between 8am and 8pm, an additional carer between 7am and 3pm and 1 nurse and 3 carers between 8pm and 8am. Two people who live in the home were spoken with during the visit. Both said they thought there were enough staff to meet their needs and said staff responded quickly if they used their call bell. Two care staff were spoken with during the visit. Both said they thought there were enough staff to meet peoples needs and said they received good support from the manager. During the visit we observed the support provided as people had their breakfast. 15 people were having breakfast in the dining room and staff were taking trays through to some people in their bedrooms. Staff were not rushed and spent time asking people what they wanted and responding to requests for assistance. What the care home does well: What they could do better: We have not identified any areas that require action to be taken during this visit.
