What the care home does well Work is ongoing to improve the environment in which people live. People who live at Camden Road receive support from staff members who are well trained. Date of last inspection Brief description of the care home Camden Road residential home provides care for up to twelve people aged sixteen years and over that have an autistic spectrum disorder. The home is made up of two separate buildings (19A & 19B) providing care almost independently of each other. Bedrooms are situated on the ground and first floors. All of the rooms are single. Four rooms have full en-suite and four have hand basins. There are lounges and dining areas in each building. The two separate gardens are well tended and reflect the different interests of the people who live there. The home has also hired a nearby allotment to enable staff and residents to grow their own produce. Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 2 of 6 What we found:
A number of rooms in both buildings (19A & B) have been redecorated since the date of the last inspection. Bathrooms have been refurbished and new furniture has been purchased for communal areas. The boiler has been replaced but continues to cause problems. Arrangements are in place for staff to summon assistance to restart the boiler in an emergency. Electric showers have been installed so there is access to hot water at all times. A radiator in a quiet room (19B) has been replaced but has not been recovered. The registered manager stated that a new cover had been ordered. He reported that the risks associated with the continued use of the room had been assessed and were felt to be manageable. He stated that work continues to locate more suitable accommodation for people who use the service. The ratio of staff to each person who uses the service is assessed by their funding authority. The registered manager stated that staffing levels at the home exceed the requirements set by those authorities. Senior members of staff are deployed in additional to normal staffing requirements. Staff from a day service run by the National Autistic Society also provide support. The home has access to its own relief staff and regular agency staff are used wherever possible. Staff have received training on issues such as person centred planning, risk assessment, medication, protection of vulnerable adults, Studio III, first aid, food hygiene, health & safety and manual handling. Training is provided by external trainers or the Societys own training department. A team leader (19B) stated that all staff have obtained National Vocational Qualification level 3 with more senior staff having completed level 4.
