Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. All sections of the AQAA were completed and it gave us a reasonable picture of the current situation within the home. The evidence to support the comments made was satisfactory, although there were areas where more supporting evidence would have been useful to illustrate what the service had done in the last year and how it was planning to improve. We received 6 completed surveys from people living in the home. Most people said they usually had the care and support they needed, including medical care. Most people said there were usually enough staff available when needed. Most people said they knew who to speak to if they were not happy and how to make a formal complaint. People told us Newlands House is a very good home in every way. They do go out of their way to make sure I am well looked after and Generally care is good. 5 of the 6 people commented on shortage of staff, high use of agency staff, and turnover of permanent staff. They said Too many agency staff who do not know residents needs and The workload of staff has grown without compensating levels of staff. Therefore this results in our choices being eroded Other comments included residents never get introduced to either new staff or agency staff...not always kept up to date with what happens in the home some general areas are dirty and cobwebs etc! Cleaning dept nearly always run short staffed laundry could be better organised and better staffed We received 3 completed surveys from staff at the home. They told us they usually had enough information about the needs of the people in the home. They said they had relevant training to help them to understand and meet peoples needs. They said there were usually enough staff to meet peoples needs. 2 of the 3 staff commented on staff Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 shortages and the use of agency staff. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection and they have shown that they have managed issues well. However, we have some concerns about how the home is being managed and how this is affecting outcomes for people living at Newlands House. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? The next inspection of this service will be based on the Fees and Frequency Regulations 2007 and the assessment of risk of the service. This will be further clarified when the new registration and inspection system under the Health and Social Care Act 2008 is confirmed. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
