What the care home does well The home was clean and tidy and the people tell us it is a `homely` place to stay. We spoke to some of the people in the home. One person told us that the staff `puts up with me very well`. It was also said that the `staff are good` and `they work hard`. Other comments include `the food is very good`, `its good enough for me`, `they do really well`, `its lovely`, `nothing is too much trouble for them` and `they help out when I need help`. The people told us that they make cards and sell them. These cards were seen at the front of the home. We observed two people laying tables for lunch and said that they enjoyed doing this. The people`s rooms seen were indivisualised to their needs. The people tell us that they like their rooms. We spoke to staff on duty. We were told that they `loved their job` and had been working at the home for many years. The home did not use agency staff but the staff said that they covered the hours when staff go on holiday or when off sick. It was also said thatmost of the staff had been working at the home for many years. This also provided continuity to the people. Staff told us that training was very good at the home. It was said that the manager was very good and listens and talks to them. The AQAA says this is how we have improved in the last 12 months. `The residents requested that the food menu was changed in the evening, the new menu was chosen by the residents themselves`. It was said that `relatives and friends meeting are arranged and advertised`. The `activities have improved by bringing more outside people in to do arts and crafts`. The home had also employed 2 volunteers to help with activities. We are told that `the comfort of our short stay rooms are re furbished offering en-suite, and provided with profile beds to enable residents recovering from operations to maximise their independence`. 7 rooms have been up-dated with en-suite showers and toilet. The `tumble dryers, freezer, microwave, T.V. aerials, and bedlinen was replaced`. 1 bathroom and I toilet was redecorated. The home has improved the `water low assessment, and after training all our profile cushions are now re-newed annually`. What the care home could do better: The home continues to provide an excellent service for the people living in the home and they are aware of improvements that they need to make by listening to the people. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: This random inspection was undertaken on the 24th of May 2010. The manager of the home was not working on the day of the inspection. The care manager and senior member of staff helped with the inspection process. The home completed an Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) which is a self assessment tool that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gives us some numerical information about the service. The surveys sent to the home by the Care Quality Commission were completed by the people using the service and these were all very positive about the care the people received at the home. Staff surveys received were also very positive about working at the home. We looked at the complaints file and we were told that no complaints had been made to the home by any of the people or their families. However there were thank you letters received from families of the people who had stayed at the home and from the people about the care and support provided by the home. We inspected 2 staff recruitment files of staff working in the home. The evidence showed that all the relevant information needed to ensure people are kept safe was obtained and the information in the files was organised well. The new medication room was also inspected and evidence showed that the records were being completed satisfactory. All staff that gave out medication had received the training for administering medication. A tour of the home was also undertaken.
