During the tour of the premises it was noted that a new sensory room has been created, which has been very well designed and contains some excellent sensory equipment. New windows and heaters have been installed in the conservatory, and new blinds are being ordered, which will help to ensure the environment is comfortable all year round. The kitchen was seen to have had new units fitted and a new fridge. Planned improvements in the near future were confirmed to be new furniture in all bedrooms, all bedrooms to have new carpets and be redecorated and new/brighter chairs are to be put in each bedroom. The lounge is due to have new units, new carpets will be laid in the lounge, hall and stairway and new flat-screen televisions are being purchased. There are plans for fundraising events to be held for the `Oak Trees Amenities Fund`, from which it is planned to buy some new garden furniture and build a patio area specificallyfor the guests at Oak Trees. In the meantime, good information continues to be provided for guests by way of a Service User Guide and Oak Trees continues to have a very good assessment process for new and prospective guests. It was confirmed during this visit and from information seen in the AQAA that no complaints have been received by the service since the last key inspection and there have been no safeguarding issues. Meanwhile from information in the AQAA, it was stated in the section `What our service does well`: "... Our Statement of Purpose and Service User Guide are clearly written with pictures making them easily understood and are available in an audio version. Care Plans are excellent giving good pen pictures of each service user, empowering and encouraging them to live their lives as independently as possible. Service users attend regular meetings to review and update policies and procedures. Some service users attend public Committee meetings..." The section `How we have improved in the last 12 months`, the following was confirmed: "... Service users have been supported positively through the person centred planning process to achieve their goals and aspirations, this process has been improved through work with partner agencies, the service has continued to improve the ways in which service users can influence the service they receive and the overall management of the services we provide. This influence has led to a number of changes in the service. We have provided more training to service users and have updated the training for staff..." What the care home could do better: There are no areas in which the Commission feel Oak Trees could do better at this time, although it was stated in the AQAA under this section that the staff and management feel they: "...could further improve service user influence through the entertainments committee and the policy and procedure group and we will monitor and review the effectiveness of both these groups..." They also help me to solve any issues... ...help me to go out alone... ...they help take us on holidays which we help to choose... (From Staff) ...the managers support the staff and service users well and they are on hand 24 hours a day... ...we make sure we know the needs of our tenants/guests, we keep up to date with training and policies, we communicate well within our staff team, we keep our promises to tenants and guests and build a good, firm and trusting relationship... ...I have worked at Oak Trees for years. The guests enjoy coming to stay, going out and doing new things... ...All the staff work well as a team... ...a new sensory room is being built, so many guests will get enjoyment out of this. We enable the guests to be as independent as possible and the tenants enjoy discos, holidays and other activities... ...at times I feel staff could support each other better... ...it is very frustrating when we have identified changes that need to be made for our tenants, due to ill health or change of circumstances but are unable to get funding to allow it to happen. Going to panel is something of a lottery and you can wait months for a decision... What the care home does well:
