Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included; The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and by staff. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection report. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. Information from any visits we have made to the service. What has this told us about the service? The care home sent their AQAA when we asked for it. It was clear and detailed giving us all the information required. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home is still providing an excellent service. Oaklands receives referrals for any permanent, respite and day care placements from a variety of external professionals including Social Services Physical Disability teams. There are also referrals from Regional Acquired Brain Injury Teams, Spinal Injuries Units and specialist nursing team such as the Huntingtons nursing team. The service provided is individually needs led. The views of the persons cared for are actively and frequently invited and they underpin the service provision. All staff are trained to deliver personal and healthcare support whilst ensuring privacy, dignity and privacy at all times. There is a greater variety of activities available. The home continues to organise a variety of trips out according to preferences including local events such as steam train displays, county shows etc. Local shopping trips take place as well as further afield such as The Trafford Centre. A Sky television package has been purchased and a regular movie evening has commenced with the option for a bought in Chinese or Indian meal or a pizza. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 Some of the persons cared for attend college, go on holidays abroad or within the United Kingdom. Staff identify goals and aspirations and both staff and volunteers aim to help the individual fulfill their goals. In-house activities include, art classes, rag rugging, exercise classes, quizzes, musical and board games. Staff support and enable the persons cared for to attend college, church services, swimming pools, cinema, theatres, parks, public houses and coffee shops. A comment was received from a member of staff: The home provides a good centre of care to the service users. The majority of staff care deeply about the service users as individuals and will go beyond the call of duty to meet their physical and social needs. One of the core values of the Leonard Cheshire organisation is that All people have equal rights and are entitled to protection against any form of discrimination. Every individual has the right to participate in the economic, social and cultural life of the community. The care supervisor has completed a Safeguarding Adults training course with Lancashire County Council and is delivering the training to all staff and volunteers. The home continues to actively recruit volunteers from abroad and to provide opportunities for employment or volunteering for disabled individuals. This provides all concerned with more in depth awareness of issues relating to alternative cultures, ethnicity and disability. The daily menu ensures a wide variety of options at meal times with special diets catered for and special requests accommodated. There is a robust complaints procedure. The manager has reported several safeguarding issues to the Commission and has undertaken a thorough investigation and taken appropriate action where necessary. All staff are encouraged and supported with training and to complete the National Vocational Qualification(NVQ) in Care, NVQ is a nationally recognised qualification within the caring services. There are currently 21 permanent care staff and 14 have obtained an NVQ at level 2 or above in Care. The manager meets regularly with departmental heads and staff from each department. This provides both staff and manager with an opportunity to review current practices and to identify any areas that could be improved. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We will continue to monitor information about this service. We can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
