The old Vicarage is a stone built detached house on the outskirts of Wooler. This former vicarage has been extended and converted to provide residential accommodation for up to seventeen older people. Day care is also provided for up to five older people. The public rooms, which are comfortable and spacious are on the ground floor. There is a shaft lift fitted for access to the first floor. The home stands in its own grounds, which are accessible and well maintained. Car parking is available to the front and rear of the house. Public transport is available in the centre of Wooler a short walk from the home. The home has an estate care that is used to transport residents. What the care home does well Peoples` care needs are clearly identified within their individual plans, which are regularly reviewed to reflect their changing needs. Health care needs are identified and met. People are encouraged and supported to make choices about their routines and lifestyle. A good choice of food was available with special diets provided as necessary. Good systems are in place for dealing with complaints or allegations. This protects people living in the home. The home is comfortable and well maintained. Aids and adaptations are fitted to suit the needs of the people living in the home. Good infection control procedures are in place to protect people living in the home and staff. Staffing levels were sufficient to meet the needs of the people living in the home. Staff receive plenty of training opportunities to make sure they have the skills to meet peoples` needs. Staff have regular supervision to make sure that they do their job properly. Recruitment procedures and practices protect people living in the home. Good systems are in place to check the quality of the service and these take account of the views of the peoples living at the home. The manager is qualified and experienced in providing care. Care plans are in place for each person that set out their needs and how these are met by staff. People living in the home said that they are very satisfied with the support they receive and said that staff are very caring and responsive. They said that they are treated with dignity and respect and that they are able to make choices about their routines and lifestyle. There is a varied menu and people said that they get plenty to eat and that they enjoyed their meals. Staffing levels are adequate to meet the needs of the people living at the home. Staff receive appropriate training and good numbers of staff have achieved national qualifications in care. They receive regular supervision and feel able to raise issues with senior staff about the operation of the home. Communication between staff is good and records confirm this. The home is well maintained, well decorated and furnished. Appropriate aids and equipment are provided for the people living in the home. There are good systems in place for repairs, general maintenance and refurbishment. Policies and procedures for Health and Safety protect people living and working in the home. People are protected by the homes good systems for dealing with complaints and safeguarding issues.
