Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 3 of 8 What we found: We undertook this inspection after we received an anonymous letter raising concerns regarding this home. The allegations made were as follows: - low stocks of washing powder. - poor food stocks. - staff working long shifts (up to 36 hours). - staff working on their own between 12:00 noon and 4:00 pm. - named person shouting at staff. To see if these allegations had any basis we undertook an unannounced visit. We spoke with some of the staff and people living here. We also looked and stocks of food and of cleaning products, some of the records that have to be kept here, and copies of staffing rotas. We were told that staff are not shouted at, nor did they feel bullied. We saw that there were ample food stocks. These included fresh fruit and vegetables, eggs, dairy products as well as frozen, dried and tinned. The majority of tinned and packaged items were value type products. We found there were ample supplies of washing powder. We saw from the staff rota that the period November 2008 and February 2009 that there were several occasions when staff were working on their own for varying periods (normally for half the day) through the day. These occasions were on 4 days in November, 2 days in December, 5 days in January and 3 days in February. We also found the manager was included in the staffing hours, so that there was no specific management time. Furthermore, there is a new manager working here. We have not been formally told about this.
