What the care home does well People using the service are able to talk to staff if they have any concerns and feel that they are being supported as required. People using the service have access to a variety of community based activities and comments received directly from individuals determine that people are happy with the activities that they are involved within. People using the service stated that they are pleased with their accommodation and that the staff are, "kind and friendly". People are supported with their individual care and support needs but also their health requirements and staff support people to ensure that they attend regular appointments as required. Evidence is maintained of these visits as a record. People are supported by a well managed and trained work force ensuing that they are protected and supported as required. People using the service reside in accommodation which is very well personalised to suit and meet their individual needs. People`s preferences and choices are listened to and respected. This is reflected, for example in their personalisation of their rooms and in addition to this the communal living areas. What the care home could do better: The service should ensue that all all documentation in relation to a person`s care needs and support are reviewed and up to date at all times. Pathways consists of two purpose built detached bungalows, set back from a quiet road in the Shrub End area of Colchester. The home is within easy reach of local shops and a short journey from Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 2 of 8 care home 12 Over 65 0 0 12 12 Brief description of the care home Colchester town centre, either by public transport or car. The home has its own transport. Both bungalows have a communal lounge and dining room with domestic style kitchens. There are a variety of bathing facilities to accommodate the varying needs and preferences of the residents. All the bedrooms are for single occupation and two of them have en suite facilities. There is a hard car parking area to the front of the bungalows that is shared and a garden with some mature trees to the rear of the buildings. There is level access to the garden and a brick BBQ is available for use. The fees for accommodation and support in Pathways range between £750.00 and £1100.00 weekly. No additional services are provided although residents give up a proportion of their mobility benefit to cover transport costs. This information was provided on the day of the random inspection. Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 3 of 8 What we found: This random inspection was conducted by one person and took place over a period of three hours. During the inspection we spent time reviewing several types of documentation, including care plans, risk assessments, training records and staff recruitment files. In addition to this we reviewed aspects of the environment and spoke to many of the individuals using the service, including staff. The service offers accommodation to people who require additional care and support. The building is purpose built to meet the needs of people who may need to use specialist equipment. During the inspection we saw many examples of specialist manual handling equipment supporting people as required. People using the service reside in a well maintained, suitably decorated environment to meet their individuals choices and preferences. The service was modern and reflected the choices of the individuals residing within it. People using the service have access to a range of facilities including a kitchen and garden area. One person using the service stated, I really like it here. In addition to this another person stated, I love my room. Peoples rooms were very well personalised and reflective of individuals personalities. Several of the people using the service were keen for us to look at their rooms. People using the service told us that they enjoy living at Pathways and that there is always plenty to do. We spoke to many of the people living at Pathways. One person told us about being part of the drama group and in addition to this discussions occurred about how people access the community on a regular basis. People told us that they go swimming, shopping for the weekly food budget, visiting museums, army barracks, cinema, the local pub and many more activities and adventures. Two of the people spoke about their holiday which is planned to Centre Parks. People using the service told us that they knew how to make a complaint and that they would be able to talk to a staff member if they were not happy. One person using the service stated, I would talk to Jim if I was sad. Staff were observed administering medication in a person centred method. Offering people their prescribed medication in their preferred method. Staff were also observed supporting people and engaging with people in a respectful and dignifying way. One person using the service stated, the staff are always kind and friendly to us. People using the service told us that they have monthly meetings to talk about any concerns within the service, holidays, outings, food and menus. People gave positive feedback regarding this and found them useful. One person using the service stated, I am very happy. We spent time talking to individuals about their care plan and support needs. We reviewed two care plans with the people using the service. It was clear that the individuals knew about their plan of care and that they were working towards their goals. The care plan evidenced that people are supported to attend health appointments and these were well recorded. The care plan also told us how people like to receive the support and care they need, taking into consideration their personal choices and preferences. It was noted that some of the records required reviewing in order to ensure Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 4 of 8 that any change in need is accurately reflected as required. This was brought to the attention of the manager of the service during feedback. Staff receive mandatory training and records reflected that this was up to date. Staff have completed food hygiene, first aid, manual handling, infection control, fire safety, health and safety, epilepsy, medication, safeguarding adults, and the mental capacity act deprivation of liberties and safeguards. The service produces a training matrix which provides up to date data regarding the training needs and achievements of the staff team. This system was effective and well managed. Staff files evidenced that people are suitably recruited in order to ensure that people are protected from harm. We spoke to a number of staff as part of this inspection. One staff member stated, I get all my required training annually when it is due. I have also completed safeguarding training. In addition to this one person stated, we have regular supervisions and appraisals. Evidence was seen to further support that staff receive regular supervisions and appraisals.
