What the care home does well We received a total of fifteen completed surveys and all of the comments were extremely positive. We have included some of the comments in this report. People are always thoroughly asessed before a decision is made about moving to Pennine Lodge. This is to make sure it is the right place for each individual and to ensure that their needs can be met. In the surveys people confirmed that they were given plenty of information about the service and they were invited to have a look at the facilities and meet other people if they wanted to. The AQAA says "Prior to admission to Pennine Lodge a full pre admission assessment, together with a mental capacity assessment takes place. As much information as possible from health professionals and family is acquired. If possible a member of the family is asked to be present at the assessment. If it is identified that the service users needs can be met in full they are then offered to spend a day at Pennine Lodge prior to admisssion to get used to their new surroundings. If that visit is successful a letter is sent out to the next of kin offering a permanent place at Pennine Lodge, the letter also contains a suggested date for admission and name of keyworker". Everyone living at the home has a comprehensive care plan which tells staff what action they must take to make sure people`s needs are met. The service is good at ensuring that all health care needs are carefully monitored and referals are made promptly when expert advice is required. The AQAA says "Following a comprehensive assessment being carried out a service user plan is in place and a discussion takes place with staff so they are fully aware of the service users needs. Records of all health care screening are kept in the service userplan, which clearly shows that any health issues identified are dealt with promptly and recorded". In the surveys everyone told us they receive the medical care they need and they said the staff were always available when they were needed. Plenty of activities are available for people to take part in if they wish. According to the AQAA "There is a well organised weekly plan of activities and entertainment sessions, including regular visits from outside entertainers and weekly visits from Emerald Therapeutic Activity Therapist at Pennine Lodge, two activity sessions and two arts and crafts sessions. There is also a monthly church service with holy communion held in Pennine Lodge. There is also an annual trip to Blackpool lights and grand buffet and entertainment which families and friends can both attend at Easter and Christmas. Visitors are always welcome and provided with refreshments. They are also invited as often as they wish to come in for a meal and attend any of our entertainment and activity sessions". The home has a comprehensive complaints procedure, people are given a copy of it when they move in and it is on display in the home. In the surveys everyone said they knew about the procedure. All staff have received training about their responsibility to safeguard people in their care and their responsibility to report any poor practice they witness. The home is well maintained and pleasantly furnished and decorated. There is an ongoing plan for refurbishment and replacement of furniture. The Deputy Chief Executive told us that this year a new kitchen had been fitted, the laundry has been upgraded, bedrooms have been redecorated, there are new chairs and 50 inch TV`s in all the lounges and every year there is a rolling programme for replacing matresses. Everywhere was fresh and clean when we looked round all parts of the home; in the surveys everyone said this is always the case. The recruitment procedure is robust. All prospective staff are thoroughly checked before they take up post to make sure they are suitable. New staff have a detailed induction and for the first three months they work alongside an experienced member of the team until their working practices have been fully assessed. More than half of the staff team have a National Vocational Qualification at level 2. Several members of the team also either have a level 3 qualification or they are working towards it. The home is well managed and is run in the best interests of the people living there. The management team is strong and experienced. They told us in the AQAA "The manager holds NVQ Level 3 and 4 qualification, together with RMA. The team is supported by Deputy Chief Executive, Mrs Pat Asquith, who is based at the home and who has recently become an Associate of the Institute of Chartered Managers (ACMI). All the management team hold NVQ qualifications. We also have three Trainee Deputy Managers in an attempt to maintain a well qualified and experienced management team". In the surveys we asked people to tell us what the home does well. These are some of the comments we received: "They care for my relative and keep her clean. The food is good. They have a large television, mother loves it, she thinks she is at the cinema"."They respond to the needs of residents on an individual basis". "Always able to give a comprehensive update on residents progress". "Members of staff are unfailingly kind and patient". "Excellent layout of lounge areas". "Always clean and comfortable". "Dining arrangements are very good". " The standard of care is excellent, each person is treated as an individual. The home is very welcoming and never smells unpleasant". "Staff are always welcoming and they keep relatives informed. They have a genuine affection, as well as a high degree of professional care for their residents". "Just about everything - we must accept that nothing is perfect - Pennine Lodge is very close to perfect though". What the care home could do better: The Manager and the Deputy Chief Executive are good at assessing the service they offer and they know which areas they want to make improvements in for the future. Care Homes for Older People Page 2 of 8 What we found: This random inspection of Pennine Lodge was carried out on 10 June 2010 by one inspector from the Care Quality Commission. Before our visit we sent an annual quality assurance assessment form known as an AQAA to the home so that they could tell us how they feel they are doing and what plans they have for the future of the service. The Deputy Chief Executive and the Manager completed the form and returned it to us when we asked for it. We sent some surveys to people who live at Pennine Lodge so that they could tell us what they think about the service. As most people are unable to complete the surveys themselves they were completed on their behalf by relatives and friends. We also sent surveys to some of the staff who work there so that they could tell us about the home. The information in the AQAA, the results of the surveys and the outcome of our visit tells us that the home is continuing to provide excellent standards of care and support to the people who live there.
