35Pocklington House is provided by the Thomas Pocklington Trust (a charitable organisation). It is a purpose built care home providing care and support for thirty-five visually impaired service users mainly in the old age category. The home is situated in the village of Northwood. Northwood Underground station and various bus routes are within walking distance. There are parking bays to the side of the building. Accommodation is offered in three separate wings, one of which is single storey and the other having two floors. All the bedrooms, except for one, are single rooms. On the first floor there is a wide hallway furnished with easy chairs and a display of indoor plants. The kitchen, laundry and staff room are located in the basement. The dining room, administration offices, library, recreation room and the lounges are situated on the ground floor. There are ample community areas for the use of the service users and their visitors. The main lounge provides access to a patio and terrace with awnings in place and comfortable garden furniture. There are also seating areas at the entrance to the building. By the patio is a sensory garden. A summerhouse is situated at the bottom of the garden. The surrounding grounds have safe pathways and handrails to facilitate the service users mobility around the grounds. The current fees are # 502.61 per week. What the care home does well The environment is designed to meet the needs of the residents - people with a vision impairment. It offers the residents freedom of movement in a very safe environment. The home offers a wide range of activities that cover mornings, afternoons and evenings. They have volunteers who read to the residents every afternoon. As already stated we were told that the staff are excellent and we observed very good interaction between the staff and the residents. Residents also told us that the home was very well run and this prevents problems arising. The resident`s rooms are furnished to reflect the taste of the resident and are very comfortable and homely. The large lounge gives access to the garden where some of the residents are growing flowers and vegetables. There is also a sensory garden that all the residents can access. The Manager has kept us appropriately informed throughout the last year of any incidents that have impacted on the welfare of the residents. Staff spoken with were aware of the Safeguarding Adults Procedures. Staff`s training was up to date. The outcomes for people who live in this home are very good. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 7 What we found: We visited Pockington House on the 7th May 2010. We found the home to be well managed by a dedicated manager and a team of well trained experienced staff. We found it to be run in the best interests of the people who live there. We found the staff to be friendly and caring. We spoke to residents who told us about their experiences of living in the home. They told us that they were happy there and that the staff were the very best, and that nothing is any trouble. The home only admits people whose needs it can meet.
