What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received or asked for since the last key inspection. This included: The Annual Quality Assessment Assurance (AQAA) that was sent to us by this service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. Any surveys that have been returned to us from people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. Information we have about how the service manages any complaints. What the management has told us about things that have happened in the service. These are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and any results from visits that we may have made to the service in the past twelve months. Relevant information from other organisations. Any information from other people about the service. What has this told us about the service? The AQAA has been completed by the Manager very comprehensively. Clear details tell us of the service offered and the developments since the last key inspection. It tells us that the service has not changed in the delivery of the care offered since the key inspection in 2008 but improvements have been made by listening to the people who live in this home. Each person has a care plan that is constructed and reviewed regularly to ensure that care support offered is appropriate. Risk assessments are completed and the balance between independence and risk is very carefully considered. Comments from professionals tell us that the balance between people who have behaviour that challenges and their independence being met is very well managed. Medication administration is carried out by trained staff but some residents, once assessed as able, are supported to manage their own medication. Controlled drugs are administered by 2 trained staff working side by side and both signing the drugs register. The home offers a choice of a balanced diet, although most comments about the food is positive there are a few comments about too much frozen and processed meals being provided. The home does try to encourage a balanced diet but some people choose to eat food that may not be as healthy as would be liked, by the staff caring for them. It is noted that some people are overweight and although encourage to eat healthily do not always take advice. People who live in the home talk of the great holidays and fun day trips out. with planned activities and events on a regular basis taking place in the home. The home has a robust recruitment procedure and all staff are inducted and trained to enable them to carry out their duties safely. CRBs are in place for all staff and each Annual Service Review Page 3 of 5 one is trained in the protection of vulnerable adults. Staff meetings and supervision are held regularly and records/minutes are kept in the home. Professionals tell us the team are very knowledgeable about the people who live at Point House with good communication between health professionals and the home. Staff tells us that the team all work together well and that staff morale is high with a good manager keeping the team up to date with knowledge and legislation. The AQAA tells us that since the last inspection the home has changed 2 shower rooms into 2 wet rooms and that other bathrooms have been updated. Some bedrooms have been decorated and one person has new flooring in their room. The Manager has been running the home for a number of years and is qualified, experienced and recognised by other professionals as a suitable and able person to manage this home. Communication with management is excellent was one comment from outside the home and staff have also commented on the support the manager gives by listening and being proactive. In total 14 residents, 9 staff and 2 professionals have returned their comments. Very clear remarks are positive and show the service is centred on the people who live at Point House. The residents tell us they know how to complain. No complaints have been received by the Commission and the notifications required under Care Homes Regulation 37 have been sent to the Commission appropriately and timely. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We will continue to carry out a Key Inspection by 18/11/10. However, we may carry out an Inspection at any time if information received gives us concern. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 5 Reader Information
