Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 3 of 7 What we found: This inspection was part of a programme of random inspections to see if medicines were being handled safely. The inspection took about an hour and involved looking at residents medicines and medicine records and discussing issues with a senior support care worker. We looked at how medicines were stored and found them to be secure in a locked metal cupboard. Staff showed an awareness of the problems that could occur with short stay residents and systems were in place to be sure that the medicines brought in by residents were fit to use and there was enough information available to be sure they were being handled safely. Safe medicine handling protects residents health by ensuring they have their medicines correctly. We looked at how medicines were recorded. All records had to be hand written on a form supplied by Cheshire County Council. The information written on it was accurate but staff did not sign and date the entries. Notes were made on the back of the form that we were told were receipt records but the entries did not make things clear. There were no records of the medicines taken home by residents at the end of their stay. Any left behind, if not needed, were sent to the pharmacy for destruction. This was recorded in full in a book. Clear and accurate records protect residents health by showing residents have had their medicines correctly.
