Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the home. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the home. It also gave us some numerical information about the home. Surveys returned to us by people using the home and from other people with an interest in the home. Information we have about how the home has managed any complaints. What the home has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection report and the results of any other visits that we have made to the home in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the home. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it and it was clear and gave us all of the information we required. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service but that they need to be vigilant to maintain standards and continue to identify what further improvements they need to make. We received feedback from a good number of the people living at the home, which was written down with staff help, and they were all positive about the service being provided and about the the staff employed by the home. We were told that: I am helped to make my room nice with the things that I have bought myself; the house is always warm and clean, Staff help me to understand others so I can fit in and stay safe, This a stable place, comfortable and happy to be in; the home has everything that I wish for, The home is clean and I do fun activities that I enjoy doing every day, The home helps to give me a very good standard of living, The staff help keep me on a balanced diet and deal with any medical problems I may have. They help me understand proper behaviour and how to deal with negative opinions. People said that the staff always listen and act on what they say to them. They told us that they receive the care and support that they need, and that usually there are enough staff available when they need them. However three people felt that there could be more staff to help with outings and to go out socially; most people said that they liked the meals provided and found the variety and quantities were very good. People who replied to us confirmed that the home arranges medical care when necessary and that Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 everybody knew who to speak to if they were not happy. In the AQAA it was confirmed that there had been no legal requirements made at the last inspection and we were told about other improvements that had been made at the home in the past 12 months. Living arrangemenst have been changed and the continuing programme to help peole to move on into community facilities has been targeted on five women who now live together within the home. Safety facilities around the home have been improved for the increasing numbers of people who are becoming more physically dependent; these are arranged so that their independence is encouraged. The arrangements for dining have also been changed so that people have more choices. Care plans have been improved and outside health and social care professionals continue to be involved with individulas and at a planning and development level for the home. We were told about the ongoing programme of staff training, and the AQAA indicated that approximately two thirds of the staff have completed the National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) at level 2, which is in excess of the national targets. With the employment of a Training Officer the overall programme continues to be more relevant to staff needs and the Learning Disability Qualification (LDQ) has been introduced for new starters, to complement their induction programme. Staff are more involved in having their say about how the home is run, and staff confirmed in their replies to us that they have good access to support from senior staff. There has been a low turnover of staff in the past twelve months and a new member of staff described the positive experience he had enjoyed in coming to work at the home. Generally staff felt they were informed about things happening at the home. All replied positively to our questions and their answers indicated that things always or usually were carried out, although two echoed the view that more staff would support a better range of activities outside the home. The AQAA indicated that there had been no complaints made about the home since the last inspection, and also that there had been no situations that required referral under statutory procedures for safeguarding vulnerable people in the past year. Throughout the AQAA the manager was able to describe plans to improve the home, and underlined the homes commitment to modernising its services and to encourage our people to be individuals and to support them to overcome any barriers that may prevent them from fulfilling their aims and aspirations. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 17th December 2011. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
