What the care home does well The ground and first floor units were warm and comfortable. Residents spoken with said that they were `warm enough` and `comfortable`. Temperatures were being maintained in these areas between 25 - 27c at the time of inspection. Since concerns were raised by the Local Authority the home has been monitoring and recording the temperatures in each area of the home over a twenty-four hour period. Records demonstrated that the temperature on the ground and first floors had been between 23 - 27c for the previous 24 hours. It is clear that residents were comfortable with the temperature in these areas. What the care home could do better: The temperature on the second floor was lower than that of the other two floors. Temperatures in the bedrooms and communal areas were recorded at 20 - 22c at the time of inspection. Two residents in Apple Blossom lounge said they were feeling `a little nippy` and `chilly`. There is a need to ensure that a comfortable and safe temperature are maintained throughout the home and that `cold spots` are eliminated. There is also a need to develop an emergency procedure that can be put into action in the event that there are further problems with the heating supply. This random unannounced inspection was undertaken on Saturday 7th February by Julie Willis - Regulatory Inspector. The focus of the inspection was to check that residents were living in a warm comfortable and safe environment. A recent death at the home and subsequent visits by Social Services under safeguarding adult procedures had raised some serious concerns about the temperature of the home and the safety of people living there. The Deputy Manager was present during the inspection and accompanied the inspector on a tour of the building.
