What the care home does well Residents who are really confused and have dementia are generally well supported and cared for by the staff. One of the residents said that ,`the staff are really marvelous do I can`t complain about anything`. These comments help to demonstrate to us that residents are well cared for at the home. The care plans included information about each residents physical, social and communication needs. We saw care plans had been written from an initial assessment of what the residents needs are and what support and help they need. Since the last inspection there is a a new style of care plan in place for residents, written in a much more individual and person centered way. We read three of the new style care plans. We found them to be clearly written with some helpful information to guide staff about how to care for each resident, they also reflected the uniqueness of each resident. The care plans we saw had been had been reviewed and updated regularly by the staff. This helps to demonstrate the staff know what sort of care and support that residents need. We saw staff talking to residents in a warm, friendly way. The staff helped people with their care needs in a kind and patient manner. We checked the stock of medication held in the home to see if medications are looked after safely. The stock of medication we saw was generally satisfactorily organised. Rodney House Care Home is a converted residential house. The home is near to private houses and it is a short distance from the centre of the town of Weston super Mare. Rodney House is also near to bus stops into the city of Bristol. This transport access means residents can be a part of the community if they want to be, it helps their friends families and significant others to be able to visit the home if they do not have a car. We found the home looked clean and tidy in all parts that we saw. The carpet has been removed from some communal areas and a domestic design of laminated flooring has been put down in its place. This is more hygienic in the home and also means there is no obvious offensive odour. The building is wheelchair accessible, there are different types of adaptations in place to help assist residents and visitors with disabilities throughout the building. What the care home could do better: Ensure that care plans show how to meet residents full range of needs. All care plans need to show clearly what staff need to do to provide residents with the care and support they need in all areas of their lives. Medication charts must accurately record the dose of medication that residents have had given to them, to make sure residents are given the right doses of medication for their health and well being. We heard staff call a number of residents ,`sweetie` or poppet`. We discussed the use of endearments with Ms Chambers. We suggested that unless this was how a person wanted to be referred to, the use of these terms could be seen as childlike and demeaning.
