What the care home does well The outcome of the audits of each staff file had been documented in the front of each staff record making it easier at a glance to establish what records had been obtained. The regulations state that for staff who have limited contact with people at the home, then CRB checks can be done at the standard level. It was good that for staff who were in positions such as domestic and maintenance workers criminal record bureau checks had been obtained at an enhanced level. This is good practice as it is a fuller check than the standard disclosure. What the care home could do better: The audit sheet for each staff file had a space to record when the staff had first started working in the home. This had not been completed and so the reader of the file would have to search through the file to find out when the staff had started. Whilst information looked at indicates all staff have had a CRB check some of these were over five years ago. It is considered good practice to re do these checks every three years to make sure that staff have not had any new convictions that they have not told the home about. The home has a format in place for completing risk assessments where staff have a criminal conviction. For one staff who had a conviction records showed that the manager had now had a meeting with them to discuss the circumstances of this. The manager told us she intended to document the outcome of this. A risk assessment had been completed that was adequate in content . It could however have been more detailed to include all of the factors that had been considered in making the decision that the staff was suitable to work in the home. We visited the home to check compliance with a statutory requirement notice with regard to recruitment practice. Evidence at this visit indicated that the home had complied with the notice, however we could not make a full assessment as no new staff had been employed. The staff rota and discussions with the manager showed that no new staff had been recruited since our last visit to the home in December. This meant that we could not assess the homes practice in recruiting new staff, we will do this at our next visit to the home. The rota showed that the home has twenty staff including the manager. We looked in detail at the recruitment files for thirteen staff and sampled files for the other seven staff. At our last inspection to the home we found that staff recruitment practice was poor. Some staff files did not have all the required recruitment records to show that the procedure followed had been robust. We found that since our last visit the manager of the home has completed an audit of each staff file to ensure there is a criminal records bureau check (CRB), references, application form and proof of identity for each staff. Where documents were previously missing, for example proof of identity and references the manager has taken steps to ensure these are obtained.
