What the care home does well This home would not meet the standards expected from a newer build and some of it is rather old fashioned in its presentation. However it is very clean and homely and seems to meet the needs of the people who live there. The current Registered Provider / Manager has spent a considerable amount of money on refurbishment including the installation of a chair lift and platform lift to the front door to improve access. There is an ongoing programme of redecoration in place. At the time we visited there were nineteen residents in the home and they looked happy and well cared for. All of them have dementia but some were able to talk to us and they told us that the home was a nice place to live in and the staff were very kind to them. They were very complimentary about the food that was served to them as well. There are pictures around the home of various activities that residents have taken part in, including trips out of the home and there had recently been a garden party. There is an emphasis on trying to engage families and friends in the care of the residents making them a part of any decision making. Several of the staff have worked in the home for some time, which provides continuity and familiarity to residents, especially important for those people who are confused. Those we spoke with, had a good understanding of the residents and their problems. we were able What the care home could do better: The service sent us their Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA ) which told us how they had met the requirements set at previous inspections and about their plans for the future. We did not issue any requirements at this inspection. We will continue to inspect the home according to our agreed inspection plan, although we can visit at any other time if we are given information which concerns us. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: We had received some information about this home which raised some concerns about the safety of residents in the event of fire. We were told that fire exits and corridors were obstructed which could prevent people leaving the home swiftly should the need arise. We were also told that staff had a limited knowledge about the residents in the home. Therefore, we decided to undertake a short inspection of the home. On the day that we visited all of the corridors and exits were completely free from obstruction. We were able to check records and see that regular fire drills take place so that all of the staff are aware of what they should do and we also saw that fire alarms and equipment are regularly checked. We spoke with some of the staff in the home who were able to tell us about the training they had received and we looked at the records of the sessions that they have attended. The majority of them are qualified to at least NVQ level 2 with some progressing towards a level 3 and two staff having already achieved this. All of the training that we consider to be mandatory has been completed and staff have all undertaken a dementia awareness course. We were able to speak to several of the residents currently living in the home and to the registered manager and some of the staff.
