Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? The last key inspection of this service was carried out on 12 June 2008. That is the date the quality rating was given. This is the first Annual Service Review (ASR) since then. We looked at all the information we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included: The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA). The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. We have not made any other visits to the service since the last key inspection on 12 June 2008. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. On this occasion we did not send any surveys to people using the service. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service and that they know what further improvements they need to make. There were no requirements following the last inspection. We made some good practice recommendations following the last inspection and in their AQAA the home told us they are implementing these recommendations. For example, they told us they have now employed an activities organiser so that people living in the home will be able to benefit from a more varied and regular programme of activities. The home told us about other improvements they have made. For example to improve the way peoples health care needs are met they have changed the nutritional risk assessment to make it easier to identify people who may be at risk of malnutrition and Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 they now make sure that all staff who help people with their medicines have an annual training update. We have not had any complaints about the service in the last 12 months. The home told us they have had one complaint and this has been dealt with. The home told us that all staff have now attended training on the protection of vulnerable adults (safeguarding) to help make sure people are protected from abuse. The home has systems in place to make sure that people using the service are able to share their views and are kept informed about changes. For example they send questionnaires to people and publish a summary of the results. They told us they are planning to send a regular newsletter to people and their representatives to keep them up to date with what is happening in the home for example planned special events and staff changes. The home told us they are continuing to refurbish the building to make sure it continues to provide a pleasant place for people to live. The home has good recruitment procedures and this helps to protect people by making sure they are only cared for by staff that are suitable to work with vulnerable adults. The home continues to provide staff with the training they need to meet peoples needs. The manager told us she is looking for a suitable training course on the care of people with dementia so that she can improve her knowledge in this area and keep up to date with current good practice. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection and they have shown that they manage these issues well. They work well with us and have shown us that their service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, we will do a key inspection by 11 June 2010. However, we can inspect a service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
