Annual Service Review Page 3 of 7 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection on 14th August 2008. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was returned to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Responses to any surveys we sent out. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information from other organisations including those who commission this service on behalf of social services clients. What other people have told us about the service. A telephone interview with the Registered Manager on Monday 8th June and Friday 17th July, 2009. What has this told us about the service? The AQAA stated that the following improvements have been made in the last 12 months: -Suggestions by service users have been implemented including starting some new activities, adding new dishes to the menu, and providing additional garden seating. -The handyman and domestic staff are now involving service users in their activities and encouraging people to participate or offer advice. -The summer house has been developed into a workshop for service users, and more plants have been purchased for the sensory area of the garden. A new fish tank has been installed in the lounge. -Information about new residents is now shared with all staff rather than just the trained nurses and the new persons Keyworker. -Care plans continue to improve and are now more person centred, with more involvement from service users themselves. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 -The home has started using the Liverpool Care Pathway for better end of life care. -The manager is now a trainer for Safeguarding Adults which enables training to be more accessible for all staff. She has also completed an MSc in Positive Care of Older People. -Refurbishment continues and a new walk in bath has been fitted. Blinds have been fitted in the lounge, and some new appliances purchased including a washing machine. New fire safety signs have been fitted. -Improvements have been made in infection control following an audit by the infection control nurse, including glove and apron dispensers for staff, and pedal bins being purchased for bathroom and toilet areas. -Monthly health and safety monitoring is now carried out and recorded, and improvements have been made in relation to the prevention of legionella as recommended at the last inspection. It was noted by the inspector that the AQAA was very well completed with an excellent level of detail about the service currently provided, and the improvements made since the last inspection. A selection of surveys were sent to the manager to distribute prior to this Annual Service Review, and seven were returned to the Commission. One was received from a care manager, four from members of staff, and two from residents. The care manager ticked that they were Always kept up to date with important issues, and care workers Always had the right skills and experience to look after people properly. They also noted that The manager appears very engaged....and staff seem knowledgeable and helpful. Two residents returned surveys and both ticked that they either Always or Usually received the care and support they needed, and that there were staff either Always or Usually available when they needed them. They both ticked Yes to the question about whether they knew who to speak to if they were not happy about something. A number of positive comments were made including: I like Sandridge House and the staff welcome my family and visitors. The activities lady is very kind and helpful. Four staff surveys were returned and all ticked that they had proper recruitment checks before they started work, and that their induction covered everything they needed to know. A number of positive comments were added including: We get a lot of training.; The home manager has an open door policy and you feel free to air your concerns and anything that needs to be corrected is corrected immediately.; and They give me support and supervision and the manager has helped me and listened to me. I have learnt a lot. In answer to the question on how the home might improve, one suggested having a minibus, and another noted planning ahead to get some higher beds for service users. Following the draft report being sent out, a further survey was returned from a relative of someone living at this home. They were pleased with the care being given and ticked that staff were Always available when needed. They also noted that The staff Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 are great. Very friendly and caring. The AQAA states there have been 13 complaints in the last 12 months and the manager outlined how these had been dealt with. There had been several complaints about laundry and these had now been resolved. The manager said there were no outstanding complaints at this time. One Safeguarding Adults referral was made last year and has now been satisfactorily concluded, and another more recent referral is still being investigated. The previous report from the inspection carried out in August 2008 noted that Arrangements for care planning are good, and residents spoken to were pleased with the care they received.
