What the care home does well We found that medicines are stored safely and well managed in the home. The administration of medicines is recorded accurately. Regular audits are carried out to check that all medicines can be accounted for. We saw that information about medicines in a person`s health action plan is illustrated with photographs and drawings, and easy to understand. We found that all staff had attended medicine training within the past two years and that further training was planned in 2010. During the inspection we looked at the way in which medicines are handled, stored and recorded in the home. We watched one person being given their morning medicines and saw that this was done in a friendly and safe manner. Later in the morning another member of staff checked the medication administration records (MARs) and blister packs of tablets to make sure that the medicines had been given correctly. We saw a rota on the wall which showed us that this check happened every day. We found that a painkiller is prescribed when required for most people living in the home. Each persons supply of these tablets is counted every three days to check that no errors have been made. In addition, all medicines are checked once a month to ensure the suppliers expiry date has not passed. The use of creams is recorded on MARs. We saw a staff member signing the MAR after applying cream when he had finished bathing a person. We looked at the MARs currently in use and the MARs from the previous month. There were no missing signatures in the administration record. We saw that medicines are stored safely and that the home has a cupboard that is suitable for storing controlled drugs, should this be necessary in the future. An accurate record of the receipt and disposal of medicines is kept We saw that some painkillers, another tablet and a lotion were labelled take as directed or take when required by the pharmacy. We saw a letter that the homes manager had written to the GP practice about this; the manager told us that she had also spoken to pharmacy staff to request clearer directions for giving the medicine safely. We looked at the health action plans and care support plans belonging to two people. The plans contacted details of the medicines the person was taking, illustrated by photographs and drawings so that the person could read about their medicines for themselves. One person had special medical needs and these needs were recorded. We found that all staff had attended medicine training within the past two years and that further training was planned in 2010. Records of the training each staff member had successfully completed were kept. However, we found that the reference book on medicines available to staff was out of date.
