What the care home does well St Catherine`s is well managed and provides high standards of care to people living in the home and their relatives. Staff employed at the home are highly regarded and provide a warm and welcoming environment both for residents and relatives. Staff are thoroughly checked to ensure they are suitable to work with vulnerable adults. The standard of catering is good so people are well nourished. One relative told us, "Christmas Day in particular was lovely in here. The staff had made it as nice as they could. The cook had done her best". What the care home could do better: The home should try to involve people and their relatives in drawing up and reviewing their care plans so that they have knowledge about the care provided and can contribute to this process. All staff should undertake training in safeguarding adults so they know what to do if they suspect someone is being abused. All staff should take part in regular fire drills so they know what to do to protect people living in the home if there is a fire. It also has its own transport. Fees range from 417 to 568 pounds per week Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 9 What we found: Choice of Home We looked at the records of two people who had recently come to live at St Catherines Nursing Home. One record was for someone accommodated on Weaver Unit and the other for someone living on Meadow Unit. The registered manager of St Catherines had visited both people before they came to the home to find out what their care needs were and to decide if their care needs could be met at the home. The information recorded on the assessments was detailed and included information about the physical and social care needs of both people. This information also included any identified risks that would need to be managed by the home staff. Several relatives commented that they had chosen St Catherines because of its good reputation. Health and Personal Care We looked at the care plans of the two people who had recently moved to St Catherines. These were of a good standard and had been individualised to reflect the different care needs of both people. The care plans had been evaluated since admission to check if any changes needed to be made to the care plans. They also indicated that care home staff had involved healthcare professionals such as doctors and chiropodists when necessary. Although staff said they asked people if they would like to be involved in drawing up their care plan and reviewing it one person and relative said that this did not happen. This is important as it helps people to understand the care they are receiving and to have some control over this care. People living in the home said that staff treated them with respect and protected their privacy. Medication records were seen and found to be satisfactory. One relative commented, staff are really friendly, can approach them about anything. Daily Life and Social Activities The activity coordinator at St Catherines has just retired and the manager has taken prompt action to find a replacement staff member to ensure continuity. People said they had enjoyed the activities provided by the former activity coordinator and felt that they were offered choice in their daily lives. The spiritual needs of people living in the home were met as evidenced by talking to one person and reading the record of another person. The standard of catering at St Catherines appeared to be good and the dining rooms were pleasant environments in which to eat meals. One relative said that staff, ensure shes eaten enough. Complaints and Protection St Catherines has not received any since complaints since we carried out an Annual Service Review [ASR] in April 2008. People living in the home and relatives said they were aware about how to complain if necessary. The home has also not been involved in any safeguarding adults issues since its last ASR. A number of staff have not recently undertaken training in this topic and so might have up to date awareness of how to make sure that people living at the home Care Homes for Older People Page 4 of 9 are fully protected. Environment St Catherines provides a safe, clean and pleasant living environment for people in the home. Several relatives commented about the high standards of cleanliness. It was also noticeable that there were areas of the home where people could enjoy a quieter environment if they wanted. All communal living areas were furnished to a high standard and were comfortable, bright, airy and spacious. Staffing We looked at the recruitment records of a new staff member. These were satisfactory and showed that the home had conducted thorough security checks before employing the person. Staffing levels at the home appeared adequate to meet the needs of the people living there and staff said that they enjoyed working at the home. Staff said that they were given opportunities to undertake relevant training courses and much of this was being conducted in-house via e-learning, which makes it easier for staff to access this training in the home. The home has recently appointed a care and learning co-ordinator to ensure that training is delivered. Although the training record chart was available it was out of date so it was difficult to track what training had been carried out. Staff working at St Catherines are highly regarded by residents and relatives and one relative commented that she was considered and cared for as well as her relative. Management The manager is a very experienced, competent and warm person. St Catherines is well managed and run in the best interests of people living there. One relative commented, so pleasant and caring. The manager is also highly regarded by staff; one said, I feel confident in her management style. There are various mechanisms in place to monitor the quality of care provided at the home, such as audits. This means that actions can be taken to put right any outstanding issues. The manager was aware of gaps on the training chart in relation to training in moving and handling and fire safety. We were given reassurance that all moving and handling training would be brought up to date by the end of February 2009.
