Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 7 What we found:
We had received an anonymous concern from a relative that staff were working long hours, that residents may not have had a choice of female carer and that some staff may not have had the correct immigration documents. A short random focused inspection was undertaken to check these aspects of the organisation and management of the home only. The duty rotas showed that most staff worked less than 37 hours a week. The staffing levels are good. The home has 6 carers on duty in the morning, 4 in the afternoon and evening and three at night. In addition there is a qualified nurse who works with the carers at all times. There were no recorded instances when only male carers were on duty. Residents are asked whether they have a preference of carer and this is recorded in their care plan. There were female night carers on duty on every shift. There is one male member of the care staff who works five nights a week. He does on occasion work additional nights and may work a part time day shift if there are staff shortages. This was evident on the December rota although not the recent rotas. The manager said that this was due to staff holidays and sickness during the December period. The manager said that she did not use agency staff and preferred to maintain continuity of care for service users by offering the homes own staff and bank staff additional shifts if necessary. The manager said that she had not received any concerns about his care and said that the supervision records and appraisal was up to date. We have not received any complaints about the care of residents in the home and have not been notified of any safeguarding concerns reported to the local authority, which is the lead agency in safeguarding concerns. The home is one of a group of three homes and belongs to the local association of care home owners. As part of their regular meetings the association had recently had a presentation by the home office on how to check workers documents and their entitlement to work in the United Kingdom (UK). The group manager had invited the representatives from the home office to visit all the homes in the group and to check the staff work status. The home office have written to say that they were satisfied that all staff were entitled to take up employment in the UK.
