Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 3 of 9 What we found: The reason for this inspection was to assess compliance with the statutory requirement notice dated 23 January 2009. You were required by 2 February to: 1. Have a system in place to ensure that all people using the service receive their medication as prescribed by their general practitioner at all times. 2. The system for the administration of medication must ensure that medication is administered and stored safely. The practice of secondary dispensing of medication must cease. 3. Ensure that complete and accurate records are available in the home relating to each service users medication and the administration of medicines and treatments prescribed by their general practitioner at all times. 4. Ensure all guidelines for the administration of medication to service users are clear, up to date and give specific instructions to staff that accurately reflect the support service users require with medication. 5. Ensure that all care staff are suitably trained in the safe administration of medicines. At this inspection we looked at care plans and the medication administration records for all of the people living in the home. We also looked at the medication supplies for people. The records and medicine supplies showed us that people were receiving their medicines as prescribed by their general practitioners . People were receiving their medicines at the correct dose and times and there had been no times when medicines had not been given to people. The medication profiles and records of administration were well kept. There were no blank entries, nor any ambiguous entries. When people were prescribed a medicines to be given only when needed they had guidelines in telling care staff what circumstances the medicine should be given. No medication is now being preprepared or secondary dispensed to be given later. The person whose medicine had been prepared and given later when we last inspected was now being supported to look after and take their medicine themselves. The risks associated with this had been assessed and were being minimised where possible and monitored. This is a positive step to increasing this persons independence. Staff have undertaken a training course in the safe handling of medication and obtained up to date guidance on the handling of medication in social care from the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain. They were able to demonstrate an Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 4 of 9 understanding of safe practice. We found that the statutory requirement had been met.
