1 0The home is owned and managed by the proprietors, Mr & Mrs Murray and their daughter as a `family` business. The Manor is an adapted grade two-listed property. The home is set in large gardens opposite the church in the village of Scotter. The village green at the front of the building is also owned by the home. Situated in the middle of the village, the home is close to local amenities, which include shops, post office and public houses. Accommodation is provided in both single and shared rooms. All rooms have en-suite toilet and wash hand basin facilities, with one room also having a bath. Rooms are located on ground and first floors. There is a passenger lift provided for people who are unable to use the stairs. The lounges and dining room areas are located on the ground floor. Car parking is provided to the front and to the side of the home and there are external ramps to two of the entrances. At the time of this inspection, the home charged four hundered and eight pounds to four hundred and forty six pounds per week. A statement of purpose and service users guide set out the resources of the home and the facilities offered to people who use the service. These documents are shown to all visitors who are considering coming to stay at the Manor.

What the care home does well People are cared for in a clean and comfortable environment and the home is decorated to a good standard. All people spoken with made positive comments about the care they received and the positive relationship they felt they had with staff. Observations made during this visit were that enough staff are on duty to support people who required help and that staff were mindfully of residents dignity and privacy. A resident commented that `its very good being here, I have settled in`. The provider, manager and staff work well as a team and there is a very stable staff group, enabling good knowledge of the needs of people. People are encouraged to make choices about their daily lifestyles and individual likes and dislikes are catered for. The manager told us that care plans are in the process of being updated and will be personalised to reflect peoples needs. She also confirmed that staff training files are to be updated and training is a priority as is new care plans for the near future. What the care home could do better: There was no evidence of non-compliance on the day of our visit. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 8 What we found: This was an unannounced visit which formed a random inspection visit. It lasted approximately three hours and we took into account previous information held by us including the previous inspection report, the service history and records of any incidents that we had been notified of since the last inspection. During this visit we talked to people to obtain their views about whether they felt their needs were being met and about their quality of life. We also spoke to two staff to learn their views about how they felt their training and development needs were being met. We also spoke with the manager and deputy manager to learn of any changes which have taken place and if there were any risks to the people living in the home. We also contacted a community nurse who visits this home on a regular basis. She made positive comments about how residents are cared for at this home. We also spoke to a visitor on the day of this visit who also expressed a positive view about the management of this home. The manager has informed us that she is undertaking a review of care plans so as to personalise them to ensure that residents views about the care they require is reflected in their care plan. She also said that new forms are to be implemented regarding reviewing the care needs of residents on a monthly and yearly basis. We talked to two people during this visit about the care they receive. One resident told us that, staff are alright, they are kind and pleasant and always come when I use my buzzer. Another resident stated that my family visits and have all commented on how welcoming the staff are who offer them tea. One resident told us that, its boring here, but Ive got some talking books which keep me from being bored and fills my time. She also said that, the food is really good and there is a choice of food on offer. There was no evidence that residents are offered stimulating activities which they would like to be involved in. There is no activities organiser employed at this home. The manager told us that there are DVDs and videos available to residents and trips to the garden centre are organised in the summer. She also said that a trip to the theatre is being organized, but only a few people wish to go. Both residents confirmed that they know how to make a complaint and that they know who to speak to if they are unhappy. Comments made to the inspector were, I feel safe here, the staff are kind, thoughtful and are sensitive to my needs. Comments from one visitor was, the staff are very patient and are are mindful of my mothers privacy and dignity. I have no concerns about the care my mother receives. A community nurse was contacted by the inspector who told us that. staff are welcoming and friendly when we call. They are very supportive and listen to what we say and take this on board when attending to residents. She also said that the management is good here and are very hands on. Two people confirmed that they always received the medication and health care support that they need. They also said that staff are available when they need them. We looked at peoples files which showed us that doctors and community nurses visit regularly. Two members of staff confirmed that they had undertaken training including; fire training, moving and handling, infection control and medication training. Training is Care Homes for Older People Page 4 of 8 undertaken to ensure that staff can meet peoples needs. They told us that there is an ongoing training programme, which they are all expected to attend. The two carers confirmed that they have undertaken NVQ, National Vocational Qualifications in caring for the elderly level 2. All training is undertaken by the use of DVDs and questionnaires to ensure that carers have understood the training given to them. The manager told us that they are looking for qualified trainers to come into the home to undertake specific training needs for staff in the near future. The deputy manager is also contacting colleges with a view to staff undertaking distance learning courses. The carers confirmed that they have undertaken employment checks carried out by the provider. This included obtaining two references, a criminal record bureau check (CRB), protection of vulnerable adults check (POVA) and a formal interview. A community nurse tells us that peoples health care needs are met and the home provides a homely, caring, friendly environment. Staff she said are friendly and helpful. Residents are always clean and well fed and their rooms are also clean. The registered manager was present at the time of this visit. Feedback was given about the outcomes at the end of the visit. The quality rating for this service is two star. This means the people who use this service experience good quality outcomes.
