Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: -The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. -Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. -Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. -What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. -The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. -Relevant information from other organisations. -What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgment is that the home is still providing a good service and that they know what further improvements they need to make. Comments received in returned surveys from people using this service include, I think the home is brilliant and cant recommend it highly enough and some of the younger staff talk and sing with individuals which is lovely and the manager is very kind and sensitive. The AQAA tells us this is a service that listens to the views of people using the service. The majority of people who use this service have advanced dementia, which can make it very difficult at times to get their views, so therefore the home involves service users families or their representatives. The home sends out a questionnaire twice yearly to families and representatives to ascertain their views and they also hold relatives/representatives meetings which people who use this service can attend if they wish to. Changes made to the service as a result of listening to service users include using a new optical and hearing service, who keep up-to-date records and contact the home when a person is due a check-up and repairs to hearing aids are now completed in a much shorter time frame, meaning service users do not have to go without their hearing aids for too long. Comments received in returned surveys tell us, whenever we call, without notice, the home is orderly, clean and staff are always working, not rushing, but in control and under the section what does the home do well a returned survey tells us, everything we have ever asked. The home ensure the equality and diversity of people using the service by having in place an equal opportunities policy, and provide for residents religious needs. Staff continue to undertake training in equality and diversity. Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 Several comments made under the section what could the home do better include provide more outside activities in the summer months and make the garden more secure, so the residents can wander in and out without fear of them going missing and the residents need somebody to do more activities with. The manager has done her best to get a person and provide more stimulation for the residents. The completed AQAA informs us that they have a clear complaints procedure in place and any complaints received are logged and monitored until complete. Information contained in the AQAA tells us that the home has received one complaint during the last 12 months which was dealt with in line with the homes policy and procedures. All completed surveys indicate that people know how to make a complaint and feel confident to do so. Returned surveys indicate confidence in the management of the home. Comments received include, the manager is sensible, intelligent and down to earth and makes you feel confident that the home is managed well. The AQAA indicates that the home has had no safeguarding of vulnerable adults referrals in the last 12 months and that there is a whistle blowing policy to encourage open reporting of serious malpractice within the organisation. Information contained in the AQAA tells us that staff have had Safeguarding training and can recognise the symptoms of abuse. The AQAA outlines that staff employed by the organisation have relevant qualifications and training for the field of practice they are assigned to. Eighty five per cent of the staff have completed Dementia Care Training. Several comments made in returned surveys about staff include, the staff are very caring and the staff at the Red House have made a good, positive relationship with my relative and occasionally staff do not seem in evidence for an extended period and sometimes it seems the staff all have their lunch breaks at once which means less people to look after the residents. It would be better if they staggered the meal breaks. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change out inspection plan and will complete a key inspection by the 25th February 2011. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
