Annual Service Review Page 3 of 7 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection which was undertaken on 11th January 2008 this included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The service sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and detailed and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information provided, and at the feedback provided in the surveys that were returned by the staff team, and people that use the service. Our judgement is that the service is still providing good outcomes for the people that use the service and that they know what further improvements they need to make. The information provided, told us that the service has received no complaints or had any safeguarding incidents within the last twelve months. The service told us in the information how they encourage people to visit the service so they can familiarize themselves with the building, the staff and people who live here. They said everyone is assessed prior to moving into the service to ensure they are able to meet peoples needs. The information told us that the service operates an open door policy which encourages people to raise any concerns. They have a good key-worker system and said that all people are viewed as individuals and receive person centred care. People are encouraged at all times to maintain their independence and to support each other. Dignity, choice and privacy are given high priority. The service told us in the information that people are able to choose how they wish to spend their time including use of their rooms. Personal Service Plans are developed with the full involvement of the individual, with the aim of achieving positive outcomes for them. The service has allocated hours for activities, and regular consultation takes place both on an individual and group basis to ensure people are involved in the Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 development of the program of activities, which supports their daily life and social activities. The service listens to the views of their staff, individuals, and their families and implement any required changes in order to improve upon the service provided. The information provided told us that all staff receive an induction following their employment and on-going training, to ensure they have the skills and knowledge for their role. All staff are encouraged to undertake a National Vocational training (NVQ) course, in order to develop their skills further. They currently have 80 of the care assistants who hold an NVQ level 2. We sent out surveys to people, that use this service and 11 were returned. In the feedback they told us; they were involved in the decision to use this service and have a care plan in place, which tells the staff what support they want. They told us the staff work in a respectful and dignified way. They said the staff members and manager listens to them, and they are aware of how to complain should they need to. They said the service is always clean and fresh. People made the following comments about what the service does well: I think this service does everything well. I have no complaints, I am very happy with everything. I am very comfortable and happy here. Everybody who visits me comments on how nice it is and how nice the staff are. All the staff are friendly and you can have a laugh with them. I like everything here, the food, the staff and the environment. I like living here very much and they do everything that I ask of them. I feel that I am well looked after. I have no complaints and am fully satisfied. The staff are very helpful, and the meals are excellent. I like it here the food is good, it is clean, happy atmosphere, and the staff are kind. Everything is satisfactory. Coming here is the best thing I ever did. We sent out surveys to the staff team and we had 12 returned. In the feedback they told us they are sometimes provided with the required information in order to meet peoples assessed needs. They were recruited in accordance with the legal requirements to ensure people using the service are protected. They told us they had an induction, and receive on-going training opportunities to enable them to have the skills and knowledge for their role. They said they sometimes receive support from their manager. They said there is sometimes enough staff on duty to meet the needs of all the people who use the service. The staff members made the following comments about what the service does well: We care very well for people. We provide really good care, and the staff are all nice and get on well. Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 This service is a lovely place to work in. The food and care are very good. The service is very well run. We have excellent care staff who work very well despite being under difficult circumstances and the stresses of the job. We provide exceptional menus, the building is always clean. We have excellent staff, who have a good knowledge of peoples needs and who provide good quality care. Staff members also told us about areas in which the service could improve upon and some of these comments included: We could do with more entertainment for people and sometimes more staff. Sometimes a little more help is required but staff work very well as a team to ensure people are well looked after. As people need more care we could do with an extra member of staff during the morning and evening, especially when we have people in for respite with high dependency needs. Better communication between the staff and the managers and team work. For the managers to listen more to the staff who are working with people on a daily basis. The service continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection and they have shown that they have managed issues well. They work well with us and have shown us that their service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? The next inspection of this service will be based on the Fees and Frequency Regulations 2007 and the assessment of risk of the service. Further clarity will become evident as the new registration and inspection system under the Health and Social Care Act 2008 is confirmed. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
