What the care home does well There has been little change of personnel over the years and the place is run smoothly by a staff team who get along well, ensuring stability and the development of good understanding of residents needs. One staff member spoken to said, "Yes we get along fine". A relative spoken to said, "The staff are so friendly and get along with each other which benefits the residents". Care records looked at for people living in the home are comprehensive, easy to follow and set out a plan of care monitoring all care needs,health,welfare and social interests. People have a say in the care they receive and in the way they are supported. This was evidenced by talking to people who live in the home and and looking at reviews of individual care which show family or individual involvement. A relative visiting spoken to said, "They always consult me about mums care". One person who lives at the home said, "They are constantly looking at what they do for me". The staff are well informed around issues of equality, dignity and respecting resident`s privacy. One staff member spoken to said, "We cover all aspects of respect information through ongoing training". A person who lives at the home wrote in a survey, " They are all respectful". What the care home could do better: The manager and staff are always looking at ways they can improve and do things better for the people who live at the home and ensure outcomes for people are good. The home is registered for 11 people and was full at the time of the inspection. The service is situated close to a bus route into Blackpool and Cleveleys and there are local shops within walking distance from the home. Parking within the vicinity of the home is limited. There are a number of shared rooms within the home; these have good screening to maintain the privacy and dignity of the people who live there. All other rooms are single and of good size. There is a stair lift up to the first floor. Information relating to the homes Service User Guide and Statement of Purpose is included in the welcome pack, which is given to all prospective residents. This information explains the care service that is offered, who the owner and staff are, and what the resident can expect if he or she decides to live at the home. At the time of this visit, the information given to the Commission showed that the fees for care at the home are £474.00 per week, with added expenses for hairdressing and chiropody. We visited the home on the 8/6/10 to carry out a random inspection, the purpose of the visit was to ensure the standard of care is good and the home continues to provide positive outcomes for people who live at the home, as previous inspections have identified. We spoke to people living at the home individually, staff, the manager, a relative visiting and a group of residents in the lounge area. We also received comments from surveys/questionnaires sent to people living at the home to get their views on how the home is run. Comments were positive and some are included in this report. We looked at the quality of care in areas of, health and personal care support and complaints and Protection. The standard and quality of care provided is excellent, this was evidenced by people we spoke to, records we looked at and general observations we found during our visit. One person who lives at the home spoken to said, The staff are truly wonderful people. One relative visiting spoken to said, I would definitely live here myself if I needed to. We looked at care records for people living at the home and found regular reviews taking place and any changes in daily routines or support needed recorded to ensure each person receives the right care . We found records of care easy to follow and residents notes we looked at were up to date and reflected the care and support given. One staff member spoken to said, The care plans are excellent and up to date. Routines watched during the day looked relaxed, some people were sat in the lounge area, staff were carrying on with their daily tasks and generally supporting people in a dignified way. One resident wrote in a survey, The staff are lovely people and treat everyone with respect. Records show people who live at the home have regular contact with specialist health care services to ensure any health needs are met and treatment is monitored. A staff member spoken to said, Its a small home so we are aware of any health problems with people who live here. We went through how medication was administered and checked medication records with the manager. We found good systems in place to ensure medicines are given out correctly and at the right time. A staff member spoken to said, I have done medication training and only staff who have had formal training administer medicines. There is a detailed complaints procedure which is made available in the documentation provided to families and people who live here. A staff member said, I covered the complaints policies during induction training. No complaints have been received by us the Care Quality Commission (CQC). One person we spoke to visiting the home said, I have never needed to complain. There is only a small staff team, however the manager informed us in the AQAA they have received safeguarding training and speaking to staff confirmed this, ensuring the people who live at the home are protected from any form of abuse and are kept safe. One staff member spoken to said, Yes I have been on a safeguarding adults course. This was confirmed by information given to us in the AQAA.
