Annual Service Review Page 3 of 6 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection. This included: The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) that was requested and had been sent to us by the service at the time of this Annual Service Review. The AQAA is a self-assessment that tells us how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gives us some numerical information about the service. Comment cards that we sent out and have received back from people who use the service, relatives and the staff. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the home, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The previous key inspection on the 5th November 2008 and the results of any other visits that we have made to the service in the last 12 months. Relevant information which we may have received from other organisations such as social services. What other people have told us about the service either as complaints or compliments. What has this told us about the service? The home has sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that we asked for. They tell us that the residents and their families are happy with the way that the home is run. That they help the resident to use advocacy services as they wish to and currently have Age Concern working with residents. They respond to the annual surveys sent to residents and families and have recently addressed an issue regarding the information that they provide about end of life care. They are planning to redevelop the statement of purpose and the brochure to make sure that people have up to date information. They have worked hard to make sure that staff training is up to date and they tell us that they have 84 of their staff with or completing a National Vocational Award at level 2 or above. This gives the residents and their families confidence that the home is providing staff that are trained to look after them well. An activity organiser has been employed, who is arranging a wider range of activities for the residents including theme activities to mark occasions during the year. The residents have had a survey to make sure that the new menu reflects the foods that the they like. This is going to be produced with pictures of the food to help the residents with their choices. They tell us that all the bedrooms are redecorated when they become vacant so that a new resident has a clean and fresh room. They have told us about the improvements that they have made over the last year and those that they are planning to make in the next year. The home has received one complaint since the last Key Inspection on 5th November Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 2008 which was resolved satisfactorily. The Care Quality Commission has not received any complaints in this time. We have had surveys returned from residents and families, which have mostly been very positive in their comments. They tell us that the staff are very friendly and care well for them, most tell us that the food is very good although we did receive a comment that there could be a greater variety of newer food such as pasta and curries. We were told that the home were very good at communicating with relatives and kept them up to date with their relatives care needs and that they had been involved with the care planning. We were told that sometimes the home was slow to replace day to day equipment such as cutlery and aprons. Comments that we received included: Nothing is too much trouble for them It was the best move I ever made The food is fantastic I am very happy here. The home regularly lets us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection or ASR and they have shown that they have managed issues as they should do. They work well with us and have shown us that their service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? The next inspection of this service will be based on the Fees and Frequency Regulations 2007 and the risk level of the service. We will have more information about this when the new registration and inspection system in confirmed under the Health and Social Care Act 2008. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
