What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received, or asked for, since the last key inspection or annual service review. This included: The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self assessment that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. Surveys returned to us by people using the service and from other people with an interest in the service. Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service, these are called notifications and are a legal requirement. The report of the previous inspection which took place on the 9th December 2008. Relevant information from other organisations. What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgement is that the home is still providing a good service and that they know what further improvements they need to make. The AQAA told us of improvements that have been made within the last twelve months which have included improving the care and quality of those living at Thurn Court, this in part has been achieved by reviewing care plans to ensure they include the views of the person, including their goals and aspirations. The frequency of outings and the range of activities for people with Dementia has increased. The service has reviewed how it operates on a day to day basis, with regards to ensuring peoples rights are supported and protected, and environmental improvements to the decor of the home continue. We sent surveys to people who live at Thurn Court, information gathered from surveys told us that people were provided with information about the home before they moved, which enabled them to make an informed decision, and that upon moving in a majority of people were given a contract which details the terms and conditions of their residence. Information we looked at told us that people are satisfied with the care and support they receive, and say that staff are available when they need them. People living at Thurn Court take part in activities organised by the home and told us that the Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 home is fresh and clean. Meals are enjoyed by a majority of people. Surveys told us that people living at the home, know of someone who they can speak with if they are unhappy and that they know how to make a complaint. Some surveys contained additional comments, as to what people thought the home does well, and the things it could do to improve. Comments included:Friendly / happy staff. Slightly larger portions and more choice at meal times. Spotlessly clean always. Staff treat my relative with dignity, respect and genuine care, cannot compliment them too highly. Show a caring attitude to those who reside there. Maintain a clean and satisfying environment. Ensure meals are provided at times other than normal times when necessary. Very little without extra staff. More permanent staff. The staff are always cheerful and ready to help. Look after my needs well. We sent surveys to relatives of people who live at the home, and staff who work at the home providing care and support. None were returned. We sent surveys to health and social care professionals, of which one was returned. Information gathered from the survey told us that the health care needs of people living at the home are met, and that advice is sought when required and acted upon. Answers to questions in the survey also told us that peoples rights and dignity are supported, and that people are cared for by staff who have the appropriate training and experience. The survey contained additional comments which included:What I have witnessed, the staff are very patient / friendly / caring towards the residents. I go to many private and council residential and nursing homes, Thurn Court is one of my top homes. The home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection and they have shown us that they have managed issues well. They work well with us and have shown us that their service continues to provide good outcomes for people who use it. Information provided within the AQAA told us that Thurn Court has not received any complaints within the last twelve months, and we the Care Quality Commission have not received any complaints or concerns since the last key inspection which took place on the 8th December 2008. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 We are not going to change our inspection plan, and will do a key inspection by 8th December 2010. However we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service. Annual Service Review Page 6 of 7 Reader Information
