Annual Service Review Page 3 of 7 Service update since the last key inspection or annual service review: What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information we have received or asked for, since the last annual service review. This included: - The Annual Quality Assurance Assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self-assessment document that focuses on how well outcomes are being met for people using the service. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. - Surveys returned to us by people who live at the home, staff who work for the service, and health and social care professionals involved in the care of people who live at Tillson House - Information we have about how the service has managed complaints. - What the service has told us about things that have happened to people living in the home. These are called Regulation 37 notifications and are a legal requirement. - The previous key inspection and the results of any other visits we have made to the service in the last 12 months. - relevant information from other organisations. - What other people have told us about the service. What has this told us about the service? The service sent us the AQAA when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. It told us of the improvements the service has made in the last 12 months. It told us the service has improved the decor of the home, improved the care planning process, and worked more closely with psychiatric services. It told us that staff attended training to support them in dementia care, and working with challenging behaviours, and the service was using assistive technology to support people in the dementia care unit. It also told us they have recruited an activities organiser, and purchased occupational activities to support people with dementia. It also told us that the service has installed a controlled drugs cabinet which complies with the Misuse of Drugs (safe custody) Regulations, and now has a robust system for the receipt, management and disposal of controlled drugs. The AQAA informed us that the service has received no complaints. We at the CQC have not received any complaints about the service. There has been one safeguarding investigation in the last 12 months. We received five surveys back from people who live at Tillson House. These were completed with support from either the family of the person who lives at Tillson House, or a care assistant. All gave positive feedback about the care they receive. All said they Annual Service Review Page 4 of 7 always get the care and support they need, and all said they liked the meals at the home. Four out of five said they always get the medical care they need, with one person saying they usually get the medical care they need. Four out of five said the service alway arranges activities they can take part in if they wanted, with one saying they usually did so. All said the home was always fresh and clean. Typical positive comments received were: the home and the staff couldnt do anything more it takes care of my needs atmosphere is good, staff are friendly and helpful I feel safe here Responses to the question, what could the home do better? were: nothing, theyre just doing the right things We received five replies from staff who work at Tillson House. Staff told us that they regularly get support and meet with their manager. They felt there was usually enough staff to meet the individual needs of all the people who use the service. Four felt the induction training very well covered what they needed to know to do the job, with one saying it mostly covered what they needed to do the job. Four staff felt they usually have enough support, experience and knowledge to meet the different needs of people who live at Tillson House, with one commenting that they always had enough support. Comments from staff included: Service users are encouraged to give their opinions on their day to day living and things they would like to be happening within the home the service tries very hard to maintain service users individuality, privacy and choices it is a happy environment for residents and staff I feel proud to be a part of Tillson House Staff felt the service could do better: having a laundry person which we do not have at present. I feel that carers responsibility should be to look after the service users and less cleaning, laundry etc to do. employ(ing) more staff having varied, consistent activities Four health and social care professionals completed the survey. All gave positive feedback about the service. Their comments on what the service does well included: Annual Service Review Page 5 of 7 excellent communication between care staff and th CMHT staff including medics advocate for their service users friendly and approachable provides appropriate care, especially for dementia patients. When asked what the service could do better, their responses included: more easily identifiable as staff working within the home as own clothing is difficult at times to distinguish between staff/visitors Beacon Villa...is normally staffed with one member of staff. Due to the clientele (dementia) I believe that there would be better quality of occupation for the residents with dementia if there are two members of staff We looked at the Regulation 37 notifications sent to us by the service and were satisfied that the service had acted appropriately with each incident. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are going to continue to monitor the service, and will carry out a key inspection as part of our monitoring process. We can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of service being provided to people who live at Tillson care home.
