What the care home does well We were told that the new manager is trusted and people have confidence in her. She knows the people at the home well and ensures that their needs are met. Recruitment at Venn House is now more robust as no person starts to work at the home unless checks are completed. This protects vulnerable people from staff who may be unsuitable to work with them. The home environment is comfortable, clean and fresh. Steps have been taken to make the walk way between the two home buildings safer and easier to use. There are now clear records as to when a medicine prescribed to be taken `as required` or `as necessary` may be given. What the care home could do better: The service would benefit from a manager who is registered. The Commission would test the person`s ability and knowledge to ensure people receive a service from a person fully fit and able to take that responsibility. The specialist storage for Controlled Drugs was not put in place as required to be so. This had the potential to increase the likelihood of mishandling of those medicines. We issued an immediate requirement that arrangements be made to do so and the Commission be informed. Staff had not been trained in the safe handling of chemicals as required to do so, although steps had been taken to arrange the training. The requirement deadline was extended. People applying to work at Venn House must make a statement as to their mental and physical health. People applying to work at Venn House must record whether they have any spent convictions or have been issued a police caution. Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 9 What we found: We did an unannounced visit to the home to look at whether requirements, previously issued, were being met and see whether the outcomes for people using the service were satisfactory. We used the providers own Improvement Plan for the service to provide us with some information. Whilst at the home we visited one person who receives a service for her opinion. We worked with the recently appointed manager, who has not yet applied to be registered. We looked at some records and some parts of the home.
