Care Homes for Adults (18-65 years) Page 3 of 8 What we found: This unannounced random inspection took place during June 2010, and included a visit to the home. This type of inspection is carried out to monitor how the home is operating, and what the quality of the service is like for the people who live there. The visit lasted for approximately three and a half hours, and before we visited we looked at all of the information we had about the home. This included the previous key inspection report, and any other reports of any events that had happened in the home. During our visit we looked at things like care plans, and other general record keeping processes. We spoke to people who live in the home to find out what it was like to live there, and we also spoke to staff about how they make sure that peoples needs, wishes and aspirations are met. Peoples care plans included a good level of information about how they wished to be supported, and the plans in place were designed to enable and maximise peoples independence. People spoken with said that they were aware of their care plans and were consulted with during there development and any subsequent reviews. The care plans showed us that there were plans in place designed to reduce any risks that people may face during their daily lives, and people told us that staff help them to stay safe when they were out and about accessing their local community. People we spoke with told us that they knew how to make a complaint if they needed to, and they said that staff were always on hand to talk to if they had a problem. Records showed that any complaints received were always managed in the right way. records showed that people were supported to access all of the health care services they needed to help them stay well, such as GPs, dietitians, epilepsy nurse specialists, community nurses and psychiatrists. We observed staff follow policies and procedures when administering medication, and medication records were appropriately completed, with no evidence of any gaps or omissions. Information we have, and records in the home tell us that staff have access to a wide range of training in subjects that help them to support people in the right way. We saw that staff had detailed knowledge of peoples needs and worked hard to maintain a good working relationship with the peole living in the home. Staff told us that the manager supports them well and they have been enabled to complete nationally recognised care qualifications. They also said that they feel part of the organisation, and have regular access to senior managers. We saw that there is an effective quality assurance system in place which includes opportunities for people to be involved in all aspects of how the home runs, and to check that policies and procedures are being followed. This is done by way of audits, manager checks and home meetings.
