What did we do for this annual service review? We looked at all the information that we have received since the last key inspection. This included: --The annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) that was sent to us by the service. The AQAA is a self assessment that focuses on how well the service meets the needs of people living there. It also gave us some numerical information about the service. --Seven surveys returned to us by people using the service (15 requested). --Information we have about how the service has managed any complaints. --What the service has told us about things that have happened in the service. These are called notifications and are a legal requirement. What has this told us about the service? The home sent us their annual quality assurance assessment (AQAA) when we asked for it. It was clear and gave us all the information we asked for. Currently the service is accommodating 28 service users. We looked at the information in the AQAA and our judgment is that White Rock nursing home is still providing a good service and that they know what further improvements they can still make. The AQAA told us of a number of developments. The staff levels have been changed to provide a registered nurse and three carers at night, and a second activities coordinator has been recruited, making for a greater variety of activities. All staff have been issued with the General Social Care Council Code of Practice, and in-house specific training in dementia has commenced. Two large bay windows have been replaced; more robust wheelchairs have been provided including two reclining wheel chairs; ten electric reclining chairs have been purchased and brought into use; the old sluice has been replaced with a modern stainless steel one. Lighting in some bedrooms has been upgraded and blinds provided in the lounge. Each of the residents who responded to the surveys, or their relatives on their behalf, said they receive the care and support they need, and that staff listen and act on what they say. Four out of the seven people using the service have said they always like the meals they are offered and three usually did so. Views were positive about the activities that were organised and the fact the home is fresh and clean. One said, Very friendly staff including the owner. I have been visiting for three years and its almost like a second home. Another said, I am very grateful for all the care and attention which the nursing staff lavish on me. I cannot think of an instance in which White Rock could improve. I would not have the slightest hesitation in recommending White Rock nursing home to anyone in need of its care and facilities. Another listed the homes good points as good care, good welcome, round the clock visiting, answering queries promptly and caring for the appearance of the residents. Another wrote of Annual Service Review Page 4 of 6 their relative being at ease from day 1. The atmosphere is caring and calm. The staff are an excellent team........they pay attention to detail..............treat patients with great respect, and all understand how to care for people with dementia. There is a high staff to patient ratio and a very good activities programme. No legal requirements had been made as a result of the last inspection. The nursing home continues to let us know about things that have happened since our last key inspection. One significant safeguarding incident has occurred that arose out of an incident of complaint, which lead to a staff members suspension and dismissal. The service fully co-operated and they have shown that they have managed issues well. They work well with us and have shown us that their service continues to provide good outcomes for the people who use it. What are we going to do as a result of this annual service review? We are not going to change our inspection plan, and we will do a key inspection by 27 October 2010. However, we can inspect the service at any time if we have concerns about the quality of the service or the safety of the people using the service.
