Care Homes for Older People Page 3 of 7 What we found: The pharmacist inspector visited the home on the 18th February 2010 to assess what progress the home had made in meeting the requirements made following the random inspection on the 10th September 2009. We found that there had been improvements in the management of medicines within the home and concluded that the home had met these requirements. We found on the whole that the receipt administration and disposal of medicines were being recorded so that it could be seen that people who were using the service were receiving their medicines as prescribed. We found that the home manager was auditing the medicines on a weekly basis and the area manager was auditing them on a monthly basis to ensure that the medicines were being administered properly. We found that the recording of the receipt administration and disposal of Controlled Drugs had also improved. The only issue we found was with some antibiotic solution that was being stored in the fridge. The records appeared to show that the MAR chart was being signed but the antibiotic was not being administered on every occasion. In order to rectify this situation it was recommended that the home identify on the MAR charts where medicines are located when they are not being stored in the trolley. We found that the home had introduced further training for the staff on the safe handling of medicines and the staff appeared to be more competent in administering medicines to the people who used the service. The manager informed us that she had been supervising the administration rounds but had not formally recorded the outcome of these observations. We found that the security and storage conditions of medicines had improved. We found that the Controlled Drugs cabinet had been attached to the wall using the correct fixings. We found that the fridge which was being used to store medicines that required cold storage conditions was being maintained within the required temperature range.
